Hello, my name is Andy. Together with my brother and sister we are continuing a family trade that began with our Grandfather in the 1960's. I worked in my fathers retail shop since aged 12 and have always been passionate about this beautiful gem.

Taking a rough unshaped piece of raw opal and working the stone into the final product is something of an art. My brother has worked meticulously in refining this skill over the years. Continuing a family tradition.

The brains of the family no doubt. Our little sis is a graphic artist by trade and leads her brothers in keeping in line with current trends.

Frequently asked questions

Are all Opals the same?

No. We only handle genuine Australian Solid Opal and as such can only advise you on these. The most common types you will encounter from Australia when looking for precious opals are; White Opal, Black Opal, Boulder Opal, Matrix Opal & Crystal Opal.

Coober Pedy the largest producing town has been nicknamed Opal Capital of the World. It is better known for Milky Opal but also produces Crystal, Black & sometimes Matrix. Lightning Ridge is home to Black Opal. They're Sometimes very highly valued if displaying brilliant Colours and Patterns. Other well known locations for producing Australia's National Gem are Mintabe, Andamooka, Quilpie, Winton to name a few. We have gained experience in dealing with Opals from most of these locations.

How do I care for my Opal?

Opal is not as hard as Diamonds but as with anything that is precious should be handled with a degree of care. The hardness of the stone on Mohs scale is around 5.5-6 so it is of moderate hardness but can break if struck hard enough. Therefore treat your opal/jewelry with love.

Your opal can be cleaned with a damp cloth, preferably one that is non scratch microfiber. Similarly when you are using a Jewelers polishing cloth on your item of jewelry it is ok you give the surface of the stone a wipe over to remove any residue or grime and restore lustre. Use of ultrasonic cleaners may not affect your opal but we don't recommend their use to be on the safe side. Also avoid storing for long periods in low humidity or extreme temperature changes.

Will the colors fade?

No. With Solid Australian Opal stones the colors you see on day 1 will be there forever.

The exception being Andamooka Matrix opal which can be enhanced by a chemical process known as "Cooking". This doesn't work on Australian Opal from other regions as it is non-porous.

What are Solid Opals?

Solid stones implies exactly what it sounds like. They are stones that are comprised of 100% Opal. Sometimes Opal may be fixed to an artificial backing (called doublets) or have an additional third layer capping added to the top with the thin slice of opal in between (triplet).

The backing acts as a strengthening base when the opal is thin relative to its viewing face. It also acts as a barrier to prevent light penetrating all the way through and enhances the colours. In triplets the capping can protect the face of the stone. These layers are bonded with an epoxy and should avoid contact with water as it can lead to separation of the layers.

Doublets and triplets have less precious opal content and can be a cheaper alternative.

What is unique about Australian Opal?

Many Countries around the world are known to produce Opal. Yet in terms of volume and value, Australian Opal is at the forefront. This reputation and value has been established by the Global Market and the consumer has grown to trust Australian Opal above all others. The gemstone is found in Sedimentary deposits and is non-porous when compared to some Opals of other regions, that is they will not absorb water. Natural water content is approximately 3-5% therefore desiccation is very rarely observed in Australian Opal. Australian Opal's colors will not fade over time and with good care will mostly likely become a family heirloom.
