FELTINDIE

Hand felted woollen rugs made of raw fleece, wearables & home decor

Byron Bay, New South Wales

Announcement    I’m a German born Felt Maker based in Mullumbimby in the Northern Rivers NSW. I create a unique range of hand felted wearables, accessories and home décor, using mainly wool but also silk, cotton and other fibres. The art of felting is an ancient way of making fabrics to be used for example in clothes, rugs and yurts. The spectrum of what can be created with wool is vast and I love to explore that.

I only use soap and hot water to rub and roll the woolen fibres which shapes them into a piece of felt. There are many different types of wool to choose from and I especially like to work with raw fleece (unprocessed wool) straight from the back of the sheep.
From this raw fleece I create animal friendly "eco sheepskin rugs" where no sheep had to die for. Because of their natural shape similar to an island I call them Wool Island rugs.
Working with this beautiful material is very satisfying for me and every piece becomes a journey of its own.

The wool I use is mainly sourced from small farms in Australia where every sheep has a name and is lovingly looked after.

Additional policies and FAQs
Please note that you are buying a natural product.
I have taken great care in cleaning the fleece and picking out the hay bits but it’s quite possible that you may still find some small pieces of grass hidden in there. If you do, just pull them out. It’s your guarantee of a real fleece!

Care instructions:
You only need to give it a good shake and hang it out into the sun. Wool is naturally dirt and mould resistent.
If you have purchased a white rug or throw and feel that, after some time, it needs a little freshening up, you could soak it in cold, slightly soapy, water in a large sink or bath and then rinse with white vinegar.
Squeeze the water out very gently and dry it flat in the sun. The pieces are very heavy when wet.
