Welcome to my Lava Living shop.
ABOUT LAVA.
We are a cruelty free small creative business in Brisbane Australia.
At Lava we work with plant based natural textiles using skilled traditional Shibori and Indigo dyeing techniques, to present a modern interpretation of ancient crafts. We use premium sustainable fabrics such as Linen, Australian Super Cotton, Organic Cotton and Hemp.
Shibori is a resist dye technique that began in Japan approx. 4000 years ago. Traditionally Shibori textiles are dyed with Indigo which was once referred to as 'Blue Gold' as it was such a valuable trading commodity in the ancient world.
You will also find some Ice Dyed pieces in the shop. These have had Shibori resist technique applied, however here I use different coloured fibre reactive dyes to achieve wonderful watercolour affects created by the melting ice.
Please feel free to sent me a message if you have any questions about my products, or are interested in a custom order for an item, or hand dyed fabric meterage.

My Creative Journey
Proud to announce I am an Etsy Design Awards 2021 Finalist.
I’m a gal with Irish/Spanish heritage having lived most of my life in sunny QLD Australia.
I grew up in an artistic family. My mother was an arts writer, my father an amateur opera singer and talented quilt maker, and my brother is a furniture designer and maker. My late uncle was a sculpture in the US and my cousins are artists in New York.
I trained at The Brisbane Institute of Art over a 16 year period practicing many art forms from Drawing, Design, Sculpture, Painting, and Print making, to Gold & Silver Smithing.
After years of working in the arts and interiors industries, in 2007 I went into business with my brother and opened an art, design and interiors store in Brisbane . Here we stocked my artwork, my brothers furniture and imported hand crafted ceramics from designers whose work complemented our own designs.
We closed the shop in 2009 and I transitioned into wholesaling and retailing at boutique markets in Brisbane and surrounds. Gradually as my imported stock diminished I began creating more of my own work including jewellery and screen printed hand-made papers.
Early in 2015 I was introduced to Shibori and Indigo dyeing. At last I had found my place in the creative world. Since then I have never been so passionate and motivated about what I do. All the freedom and possibilities with this beautiful craft are just so endless that I just want to keep learning and creating pieces that reflect my life of inspiration.
I filled my new shop with Shibori work at the beginning of 2016 so please stay connected to my Lava Living shop and follow me on Instagram @lava_living and https://www.facebook.com/lavalivingbrisbane/ for my latest creations and work in progress. .
"By embracing the beauty of human error, every piece is one of a kind."
