Australian Handmade Porcelain Homewares

LouiseM studio is a small ceramics practice based in Marrickville, Sydney. Run by designer and maker Louise Martiensen, the aim of the studio is to bring more meaningful objects into your daily routines, knowing that your favourite pieces should be the ones you use every day and not the ones trapped in the cupboard being ‘too nice to use’.

Each piece is made lovingly by hand from porcelain using the slip-casting technique, and embellished with individual pressings, carvings and colouring. Louise enjoys it’s ability to produce items in multiples, but also the possibilities it affords for individualisation through a range of techniques and processes that can be applied during and after casting, including carving, pressing, and colouring. Using white porcelain as a blank canvas, different designs have been formulated that utilise a variety of textures, colours, and forms.

Louise started her ceramic journey over 10 years ago after falling in love with the medium whilst studying at university. With an earnest to desire to push the possibilities, experiment with technique and make pieces unlike what she was seeing around at the time, she started her own business.

Drawing inspiration from the world around her, especially from nature as well as through experimentation with form, colour, materials and techniques, Louise enjoys using elements of play as well as observation to develop her pieces. Her favourite part of the job is the problem-solving involved with new work, so unsurprisingly, she produces a wide variety of pieces. As well her own ranges of tablewares, serving wares and vases, she is also often engaged in commissioned works for clients and customers.

Having a strong consciousness of our footprint upon the earth, LouiseM studio wishes only to add to it in a meaningful way with pieces that bear the mark of the hands of the maker and that people can make a connection with, using and treasuring for many many years to come, making small moments beautiful. Individual differences are accepted and embraced. These are pieces that are made to be used, held and loved; they make stunning gifts as well as special treats for your own cupboard.

It's been almost 10 years since I quit my full-time job to pursue my dream of designing and making my own ceramic pieces, and I haven't looked back! I get a lot of satisfaction out of making pieces that become a part of your daily rituals
