The Forbidden Chamber is the artwork that I first used the glass keys in. The Fairy tale it is based on in Bluebeard
Spooky glass forest of cast glass twigs. So many fairy tales involve a dark forest or woods.
I have one of my glass keys on my 'shabby chic' dresser that I repainted from the op-shop.
Some of my favourite tools for carving and shaping wax and clay. I often steal tools from the kitchen drawer!
I use the lost wax method for the keys. A little bit of fun before the messy business of casting.

Glass and Fairy Tales

To say an object is GLASS within a folk or fairytale imbues the form with an otherworldliness, with magic & mystery. Whomever 'mistranslated' Cinderella's slipper from fur to GLASS... well, I think they knew very well what they were doing.

My name is Spike and I love stories, especially those of Myth, Legend, Folk and Fairy tale. I read a lot of fantasy and science fiction, no surprise there!

I am a Canberra (Australia) based visual artist who works primarily in cast glass, though I like to mix it up now and then with textiles, animation and other materials. My artistic practice is focused on the underlying narratives found in folk and fairy tales to consider questions of becoming, transformation and 'the hopeful journey'. I work in my home studio and at The Canberra Glassworks.

I make one off sculptures, installations and production pieces that stem from my fascination with the themes found in folk and fairy stories.

My favourite folk tale is 'East of the Sun, West of the Moon' a Norwegian tale involving a polar bear, trolls and a determined young woman.

Spike Deane is an Australian based visual artist who works primarily in cast glass. Spike studied glass making at Sydney College of the Arts. Folklore and fairy tales are her main source of inspiration, creating objects out of stories.
