Really love this bag! Really well made and so much space for me to put all my bits and pieces.

I love the cheerfulness of the colours and the generous proportions of the bag which allows me to carry all I need for work, including a book to read on the train. I have bought other bags as presents for friends from Talulamei, but this one is mine!

I asked the shop owner to custom make this phone case into to a padded, zip case for my iPhone 6s, so that it will not be damaged when it is placed in an overstuffed handbag while travelling overseas. I provided the measurements and Bec did the rest. There were a few emails between us to clarify the details, and once sorted it was no time, just a few days, before the case arrived in the post. It is beautifully made, with tidy seams and will be a joy to use.

About

Becoming TalulaMei

I've always loved interesting bags and purses - totes, slouches, handbags, backpacks, overnight bags, you name it. I especially loved ones that were interesting shapes, or had fun embellishments, or used quirky fabrics. My favourite thing were the ones that looked serious on the outside and would have an explosion of colour and pattern in the lining fabric; it was like a secret joy every time I opened the bag.

One day I bought a really simple tote at a market. Once I got it home and used it a few times, I realised it wasn't great quality. I thought, “I could probably make something like this…and make it better!” But first I had to skill up.

I used to be in awe and a bit scared of sewing machines - surely I’d end up breaking something! But after a good friend showed me how to thread one (and showed me how to use an overlocker) and my godmother gave me her old machine, I was hooked on sewing.

I started exploring bag patterns, learning all the tips and tricks for making sturdy, practical yet gorgeous items. I made myself and my friends all sorts of different bags (some more successful than others), but pretty soon I realised there were only so many bags I could use myself! That’s when I decided to share the love and start selling.

A couple of years later, here we are!

I make all my bags by hand in my Sydney studio. My style is pretty but practical, something you can use every day, but that will look lovely. Each bag is unique, as I rarely use the same combination of fabrics twice. There are so many fantastic prints and textures available in the fabric world; the main difficulty is choosing which ones to pair up. I love how just a change in colour or a slight change in pattern can give a bag a completely different look.

Our lives can be so busy and drab and caught up in boring details, it’s important to have little pops of colour and fun wherever you can fit them! I hope my products give people a little bit of joy and pleasure in their everyday lives.

PS. Who's TalulaMei? The name TalulaMei came about because I love the name Talula; it seemed cheeky and kind of 20s (admittedly it's cos I loved Jodie Foster playing Tallulah in Bugsy Malone). And Mei is because it's part of my Chinese name (Mei Leng). Because I'm half Chinese I felt like that half Western, half Chinese name suited my business perfectly!

Hello! I've been making things in one form or another for as long as I can remember. I like to encourage people and bring a bit of positivity into the world. I love colour and pattern and smashing them together to see what results.
