About

The Tentmakers of Cairo are uniquely Egyptian with their hand stitched appliqué.

The work available on 'The Tentmakers of Cairo' shop is exclusively stitched by those who work in the Street of the Tentmakers, Chareh el Khiamiah, in Old Islamic Cairo, Egypt.

The tradition itself dates back centuries and the style of stitching can be traced back to the robes of Tutankhamun. Each piece is individually stitched by one stitcher and can take anywhere from a month to many months to stitch depending on the intricacies of the design.

The designs are handed down as well as being influenced by the many mosques and temples that are found around Old Islamic Cairo and through out Egypt. All pieces are made by hand in Cairo following the family designs of the Tentmakers of Cairo. Each shop employs artisans who create one piece at a time completely by hand.

Prices of the pieces are dictated by the store owners who are also the designers. All profits from the sale of works sold is returned to the tentmakers themselves.

You can find out more about the tentmakers and a documentary about them at www.tentmakersofcairo.com
