About

From Community to Couch

I have a longstanding love affair with Indonesia. My passion for the people, their language and culture (and of course, the food!) drove me to create 'The People's Fabric'.

I believe in sustainable community development, guided by local initiatives and strengths. I endeavour to reinforce these ideals by working with those who promote both gender informed practice and equality.

Whilst working in Timor-Leste in 2011, I was introduced to the wonderful world of ikat and the extraordinary women behind the weaving. It was from this encounter, combined with an addiction to my sewing machine, that the first stitches were sewn in my imagination for 'The People's Fabric'.

The People's Fabric partner with a not-for-profit organisation and a women's weaving cooperative in West Borneo, Indonesia. We are about sharing stories, embracing the ethos of sustainability and valuing transparency: from community to couch.

Through purchasing a product through The People's Fabric, you are supporting initiatives that economically empower women who are preserving their cultural traditions and seeking alternative livelihoods outside of the destructive palm oil trade, which is devastating their local environment, wildlife and community cohesion.
