For the Conscious Kind.

We’re baru. We make easy-going, sustainable clothes designed to look great and get Aussies out into the big skies, sandy tracks and rugged shores. Our clothes want the best for you and your mind, so they don’t just inspire escape; they strive to make it happen.
Getting out of town feels freaking good (as you probably know). But usually, this truth really only hits home while you’re drying off in the sun after a cool swim or cracking a cold one after hammering in that last tent peg. At baru, we make comfortable and sustainable clothes with breezy designs that utilise quick-drying and recycled materials. Our goal is to pledge a considerable chunk of our profits towards helping young Aussies explore all the lush, deep-breath moments that our beaches and national parks have to offer. Because we know the connection between nature and the mind runs deep.

For us, this commitment to advocating the power of the outdoors isn’t about words. It’s about facts. A 2015 Stanford University study showed a regular 90-minute walk in nature significantly reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety, and a 2010 Deakin study found another clear link between spending time in green spaces and improved mental health. Lots of other studies have also made this link, so with this research in mind, we thought we could help young people by creating clothes that inspire them to go camping, hiking and beach-tripping more often. On top of that, we’re reducing waste and saving water by making our clothes from salvaged plastic bottles and recycled cotton.

We, Jeremy and Blake, are two Melbourne guys who met during a year 12 tutoring session (not that long ago) and came up with the concept for baru over some pretty frank conversations about mental health. We agreed that a beach or a camping trip with mates always helped us switch off and gain some perspective, and our research only backed up our experience. Now, we’re doing our best to share this perspective by making relaxed, environmentally friendly clothes that don’t just inspire escape; they strive to make it happen. We don’t have all the answers, but we’re giving it a go. And we hope that, when you get dressed in baru, you get that little bit closer to embracing the good feeling that’s waiting round the bend.
