I am beyond delighted with this beautifully made doll. https://flic.kr/p/HYGxjC She is absolutely adorable from the top of her painted red hair, to her pretty green eyes, right down to the tips of her daintily booted feet. The pefect addition to my collection Many thanks, Jan, for your superb work on her Teddy

"In the haunted house of life, art is the only stair that doesn't creak." ~ Tom Robbins

My debut as an artist was in first grade, when my hometown museum featured my drawings in an exhibit. I was oil painting by the fourth grade, and sewing/crafting by sixth. I have always loved to make something out of nothing--a scavenger’s mentality I inherited from my mom—and my biggest weakness is an inability to throw away or pass up interesting “found things”.

Combining a lifetime of hearth-crafts, an MA in Archetypal Mythology, and a joyful discovery of sculpting, I began in 2010 to make dolls and folk art. I’m a self-taught artist in every medium I use, but my studies of mythic archetypes in story structure still fascinate me, and inform much of what I do today. I see a profound connection between people and their expression of themselves in dolls and figurative folk art. Having moved all over the US for the last twenty-five years, I have absorbed a number of cultural and artistic influences that express themselves in my characters.

Hopping from one medium to another—gourds, wood, cloth, clay, junk--keeps the art fresh for me and keeps me learning. If I had to pin it down to a Jeopardy category, the best I could do is: "Things With Faces". My favorite thing about my job (other than working barefoot) is this: there really is no end of ideas.

I enjoy making folk art and dolls with a vintage flavor, but not exact reproductions. My approach is that of the Creative Anachronist: I use the methods and materials of the past to create what I envision today.

If you're interested in the Layaway Plan, see the info in "Additional Information" and "Payment Policy".

I discovered that trying to make a custom doll interferes with the process of creating from the heart, so I don't do it anymore. I do make requested types of dolls, (ex: you want an Izannah Walker or a Queen Anne type) but always with my own original vision and interpretation. I think that's why we buy art, and I hope this aspect of my work speaks for itself.
