So beautiful—the photo doesn’t do it justice. There’s almost a velvety quality to the paper that makes the colors very rich and gives the image more depth. I’m hoping some of her cut paper work makes an appearance on Etsy soon!

About

Real and legendary creatures

I was born in Japan and relocated to Melbourne, Australia since 2002 where I work on prints such as etching and aquatint and bookbinding.

I have always loved drawing animals. In fact, I don’t remember any time when I wasn’t drawing animals, even as doodles in textbooks at school or on letters.
My mum loved animals, and I enjoyed showing off my drawings to her. Growing up, we always had pets: dogs, cats, fish, turtles. I watched any and all TV programs about animals. In a way, nothing’s changed in my practice since childhood.

As a child, I was convinced—and very scared—that there were Yōkai and other creatures lurking behind me or hiding in the dark corners of the house. They were as real as my dogs and cats, on the same level of existence.

I have also been fascinated by fantasies of small animals like cats, rabbits and rodents overthrowing society. My etchings and artist books (http://kyokoimazu.com/section/216070_Artist_books.html) and cut-paper installations (http://kyokoimazu.com/section/215940_Paper_cut.html) are equally populated with real animals and legendary creatures from Japanese folklore, as well as fictional rabbits from novels and cartoons.

To get an incite into the exciting world of printmaking, my wonderful friend Rollo Pinsent created a video showing my work process which not only shows the creative process, but also demonstrates the intricacies of printmaking in general.
