~ Why do we like to use hemp fabrics and fibres?
Well hemp is organic, fair trade, ecologically friendly, mildew resistant, biodegradable and vegan friendly.
Long time users of hemp fabrics say that 'hemp doesn't wear out, it wears in' as it gets softer the more you wear/use it.

"Hemp is the best answer. It’s about three times the tensile strength of cotton, mold and UV resistant, uses very little water, pesticides or fertilizers, builds soil… and until the 1920s was about 80% of the clothing made in the US." - Winona LaDuke via https://www.winonashemp.com/our-hemp

Unique Rag Dolls & Soft Toys designed to induce feelings of comfort & love in their owners, while also sparking their imagination, irrespective of age

The driving philosophy behind Perfectly Imperfect Dolls(r) is to create traditional heirloom type ragdolls, with untraditional, modern styling in order to better reflect people in society of today.

But more importantly to do this using only natural fibre stuffing, natural fibre fabrics, and upcycled fabrics and trims, etc.
Just as generations of other women did prior to the creation of polyester, as this is better not just for us humans but also for the planet we inhabit.

Our rag dolls embrace many of the daring, the unusual, the anything goes, no rules apply type aspects of todays society in their features and personalities.
We have deliberately designed our dolls this way for the purpose of fostering imagination and individuality and encouraging a celebration of shared humanity.

It is also with an aim to promote the sociological concept that humans should be seeing and appreciating our 'sameness' (ie. our shared humanity) THROUGH our differences and discouraging societal conformity and homogeneity.

Our Dolls are designed to be made almost entirely of naturally derived products, and to have as low environmental impact as possible. This is why ALL our dolls 'skin' fabric is always a natural fibre fabric: unbleached hemp, organic cotton, unbleached calico, or linen and wool offcuts from a local interior designer (yes even the Rainbow Spirit Dolls!).
Those fabrics are all not just easily obtainable and reasonably priced, but also hard wearing, practical, and of course, the most untreated and natural.
That is also why we generally do not offer our dolls in 'skin colours' other than "unbleached untreated natural" fabric colour (apart from our deliberately extreme rainbow spirit dolls, whose fabric we dye ourselves). As we always aim to keep our prices as low as we can without compromising on our eco friendly, low impact and natural ideals.
But please feel free to email us about making dolls in fabric shades other than 'unbleached/untreated natural'.

P.I. Dolls always supports small family businesses as a preference whenever and wherever possible. Especiallly Australian ones. Which is why:
- Our base stuffing is organic wool from Hollyburton Park here in Victoria.
- Our swing tags are handmade recycled paper from Fox Hill Llamas in Western Australia.
- and Each doll's spare outfit bag is handmade from upcycled saris by a women's collective in India.

Perfectly Imperfect Dolls(r) started in 2017 with needing fabulous and original birthday gifts for a handful of little girls, and finding nothing quite right in any stores anywhere. So i decided to make something myself - rag dolls!
By the time it got up to making the doll for the last of these birthday girls, the basic shape and style you now see was cemented, and 'Ani' became the official founding toy of the Perfectly Imperfect Dolls(r) rapidly growing family.
'Ani' was a huge hit with her new 5yr old human BFF and in fact has been snuggled with every single night since...And she is not the only one! There are many other humans, both adults and children alike, all over the world, who also now go to sleep with toys from Perfectly Imperfect Dolls(r).

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

All our Rag Dolls can be spot cleaned or hand washed.
To prevent doll hair damage, etc, cold hand wash in mild wool wash, do not spin dry.

Soft toy oddities can be machine washed, cold water only, gentle cycle, inside delicates bag, using mild wool wash or see below for sugg.

For all items: COLD WATER ONLY. NO fabric softener. Do not place in dryer or wring. Regular, old fashioned, 'air drying' only.

At Perfectly Imperfect Dolls HQ we use our own homemade Laundry Powder. But when we do use a commercial product, we use Sal Suds biodegradable gentle multipurpose cleaner by Dr Bronner's

Once washed, hang on clothesline inside a delicates bag, and / or lay item out flat at a safe distance from your household heating source

Custom and personalised orders

Custom orders are welcomed, however the extent to which our rag dolls and soft toys can be customised is limited, for example we prefer to not attempt to make versions of published characters, from any medium. You can however refer to a character for examples or inspiration assistance!

Just ask us if your custom order request is something we can do! We will get back to you in under 24hrs.

All rag dolls and soft toys made by Perfectly Imperfect Dolls remains the intellectual property of Perfectly Imperfect Dolls and may not be reproduced by anyone other than Perfectly Imperfect Dolls.

Gift wrapping and packaging

Generally, all our rag dolls and soft toys are wrapped in brown craft paper and bakers or hemp twine before being placed into a reused or recycled cardboard shipping box.
Whenever possible we try and reuse old cardboard boxs instead of purchasing new recycled cardboard ones. These are only used if they are in a clean undamaged condition and are sourced from both myself and various local businesses.
We are happy to include a hand written gift message in the box for the recipient if you would like one.

Are your products animal hair free as I have allergies!

As you may have seen from the about section, we here at Perfectly Imperfect Dolls HQ have multiple cats who are all VERY involved in most everything we do, so even though every effort is made to store all fabrics and completed dolls in an airtight, cat proof manner, I cannot guarantee they will be free from all traces of cat hair, especially as I myself never am! Plus, being a true crazy cat lady, you can bet that if I'm in my sewing room then at least one of the catties is too!
That being said, they are all short hair, low allergen varieties and it all comes off effectively and easily with a lint sticky roller, if you dont have more cat hair around you while doing it that is!

Is there anywhere that I can I see and purchase your dolls in person?

When not under coivd-19 restrictions yes. Absolutely!

We regularly have a stall at various makers/craft markets around Victoria, see our website for our scheduled upcoming market dates.

But you can also find an exclusive, selection of our dolls our official stockist, the Peninsula Gourmet Emporium in Dromana.

There is also often a very small selection of our dolls available at Headlines Hair Salon, also in Dromana.

However dolls tend to find their forever homes quickly from the Emporium, so if they appear to have none in stock, just ask when they are expecting more, as we regularly monitor and restock them!

Alternatively, feel free to contact us to discuss other, in person, viewing and purchase options (Serious buyers only please).

What stuffing do you generally use and why

We keep degummed hemp fibre, organic cotton and organic wool on hand for stuffing. These were painstakingly selected after much indepth research for many reasons, key focus being entirely natural, and able to confirm without doubt they're absolutely GMO free. Unlike many of the corn based stuffings that are starting to become popular.
We use organic wool as our main stuffing because unlike the other two, it is entirely local and an otherwise wasted, natural byproduct of the living existence of domesticated 'Australian' sheep.
Our wool is direct from Hollyburton, an organic farm here in Victoria. They practice humane shearing techniques, hold verifiable organic certification and are open and transparent about their animal care and welfare.

How long does it take you to make a doll?

A standard, or 'hardly ordinary' doll or dude will usually be finished, complete with their 2 outfits, within a day.
Custom orders often take longer, depending on requirements.

If you have a specific time constraint, drop me a line, as chances are i will be able to work something out. (Melbourne's covid-19 restriction related issues not withstanding!)

Do you make the swing tags yourself? they look handmade!

As of 10th October 2020, we are pleased to be able to announce a new partnership!
All of our swing rags are in fact handmade recycled paper tags, but no, our talents do not extend to paper making!
They are all loving handmade by Nichelle and family over in Western Australia at Fox Hill Llamas! You can find them on etsy Foxhillllamas.etsy.com or facebook facebook.com/foxhillllamaswa
