I'm loving my new range of Tootsie Totes created with vintage linen tea towels and various other vintage fabrics!
This is my latest bag design and I've called it the Ruby bag...after my daughter.
I created it with vintage and reclaimed fabrics. The finishing touch is the repurposed belt shoulder strap. At 9 x 13 inches, it's the perfect size for all your essentials!

About

A child of the 70s...vintage and retro are in my blood!

I’m a child of the 70s, so I learned how to sew as a child (both with a machine and by hand), and to appreciate the skills and love needed to sew and create clothing and everyday items. I was raised by parents who grew up in the 1930s and 40s, so I grew up in a rather thrifty household...therefore I can't bear to see anything wasted, and I love the idea of recycling and upcycling so that items get a second (or maybe even a third!) chance at life. Hence my line of upcycled blanket bags, and my repurposed tea towel cushion covers.

I received the nickname Tootsie as a child (Thanks Dad!), so that's how my shop got it's name.

My creative focus is to use vintage and reclaimed fabrics (predominantly those from the 60s and 70s), as well as vintage blankets, tea towels, doilies and buttons to create one-of-a-kind accessories and homewares. The older I get, the more I find myself drawn to fabrics from my childhood…those 60s curtains in my childhood kitchen? They're recreated as cushions. Those "Onkaparinga" blankets we all had as kids...they're getting a new lease on life as funky bags and purses.

I like to think that I’m rescuing these fabrics from op-shop shelves and the bottom of the linen cupboard. I really love being able to give new life to these beautiful fabrics that have often been shut away and forgotten. I particularly love being able to repurpose embroidered doilies: so much work and love in these pretty little works of art in their own right.

I love creating my own designs. One of my handbag designs (the satchel) came purely from a stash of fabric squares I'd bought on eBay, where my fabric was quite limited in size. (This was the fabric stash that I saw and gasped out loud because it included the same 1960s fabric my childhood kitchen curtains were made from! Imagine!) So many of my pieces take some time to make, as I spend an awfully long time sifting through my fabric stash to find the perfect combination of fabrics to make a unique, one of a kind item.

So now when I'm not sewing, I'm trawling my local op-shops (that's thrift shops to my North American friends) searching for treasure!

Welcome to Tootsie Handmade!

Much of what I do is giving old, sometimes forgotten, items a new life...like creating a fabulous cushion cover from a vintage tea towel!

I love to sew, and love it that I can share my work with others.
