From my home to yours
I've lived in the Isle of Scalpay and Harris my whole life. It's the only place I've ever known as home, and it's where every piece in my shop is made.
The Isle of Scalpay and Harris has always been known for the quality of what the people who belonged to the islands made and still make — hand-woven Harris Tweed, hand-knitted woollens, work that lasts. I grew up surrounded by it. My mother, aunties and grandmothers were all part of the Scalpay Isle knitwear cooperative, spending their days turning wool into jumpers and hats for families across the Hebrides and well beyond. My father taught me to knit as a child, and I've never really stopped since.
Today I hand-knit Aran bobble hats, aran jumpers, chunky wool jumpers, merino baby cardigans and wrist warmers using the wool I dye myself, and stitch one-of-a-kind Harris Tweed bags — puffin totes, crossbodies, and the occasional funny chicken bag for anyone with a sense of humour. Every piece is made slowly, by hand, in my studio otherwise known as my shed here in the island. It's how my mother and grandmother worked, and it's how I want to keep working when I can.
