-REFRESCAR LA HISTORIA DE GLASS-
En 2006 estaba haciendo todo lo que se suponía que debía hacer: había obtenido mi título cinco años antes y estaba trabajando como ingeniero de fabricación para una empresa aeroespacial en el sur de California. Me trataron bien en el trabajo e incluso viví a una cuadra del océano en Huntington Beach, pero algo simplemente no estaba haciendo clic.
Quería sacudir la rutina y tomarme un tiempo para reconstruir lo que haría a continuación. Rodeé una fecha en el calendario y tomé todo el dinero que había estado ahorrando y comencé mis viajes sin una idea clara de cómo o cuándo terminarían.
20 países, 39 ciudades y un año después estaba de vuelta. Había dado la vuelta al mundo hacia el este y había tomado uno de los mejores paseos de mi vida. Regresé con muchas historias increíbles y algunas perspectivas recién descubiertas muy bienvenidas.
En ciertas ocasiones a lo largo de ese viaje, participé en conversaciones en las que la persona frente a mí hablaba de una profesión o pasatiempo que disfrutaba tanto que se inclinaba hacia adelante con alegría y hablaba con todo su cuerpo.
¡Eso es lo que quería! Una profesión que, cuando hablé de ella, generó en mí una pasión que la gente podía ver en mis ojos, independientemente de las palabras que eligiera.
La parte más aterradora fue que no tenía absolutamente ninguna idea de cómo hacer eso.
Ese siguiente año después de regresar a los Estados Unidos fue probablemente el más frustrante de mi vida, tratando de forzar un regreso en el mundo de la ingeniería, mientras que todo el tiempo me desconcertaba introspectivamente sobre cómo combinar mis pasiones por el arte, la ingeniería, mientras apoyaba algo más grande que solo yo mismo.
Entonces empezó. A principios de 2008, después de haber estado de vuelta en los Estados Unidos durante un año, encontré ese pequeño kit de corte de botellas en línea. El kit contenía una pequeña plantilla de puntuación y una vela para separar la botella, junto con un poco de papel de lija para suavizar los bordes afilados. El primer vidrio me llevó horas completarlo a mi gusto, y sabía que tenía que haber una manera de crear llantas realmente agradables, suaves y derretidas. Mis amigos que vieron las primeras gafas que hice en la casa tuvieron respuestas tan animadas que inmediatamente supe que las gafas tenían un potencial sin explotar.

-REFRESH GLASS STORY-
In 2006 I was doing everything I was supposed to: I had earned my degree five years before and was working as a manufacturing engineer for an aerospace company in Southern California. I was treated well at work and even lived a block away from the ocean in Huntington Beach, but something just wasn’t clicking.
I wanted to shake up the routine and take some time to piece together what I would do next. I circled a date on the calendar and took all the money I’d been saving and started my travels without a clear idea of how or when they would end.
20 countries, 39 cities and a full year later I was back. I had made it all the way around the world going east and had taken one of the best rides of my life. I returned with many amazing stories and some very welcome newfound perspectives.
On certain occasions throughout that trip, I engaged in conversations where the person across from me would be talking about a profession or hobby that they enjoyed so much that they would lean forward with joy and talk with their whole body.
That’s what I wanted! A profession that, when I talked about it, generated a passion in me that people could see in my eyes, regardless of the words I chose.
The scariest part was that I had absolutely no idea how to do that.
That next year after returning to the States was probably the most frustrating of my life, trying to force a fit back in the engineering world, while all the time I introspectively puzzled about how to combine my passions for art, engineering, while supporting something bigger than just myself.
Then it started. In early 2008, having been back in the States for a year, I found that small bottle-cutting kit online. The kit contained a small scoring jig and a candle to separate the bottle, along with some sandpaper to smooth the sharp edges. The first glass took me hours to complete to my liking, and I knew there had to be a way to create really nice, smooth, melted rims. My friends who saw the first few glasses I made at the house had such animated responses I immediately knew the glasses had untapped potential.
