Parece que fue ayer cuando comprendí de verdad la magia del Tió de Nadal. Era Nochebuena y mi prima más pequeña, de tan solo dos años, entró en el salón de casa de mis padres. Al instante quedó fascinada por el tronco sonriente que la miraba fijamente. ¡Y a partir de ahí todo fue mejorando!
Después de enseñarle la famosa canción del "Cagatió", ella cantó con entusiasmo y comenzó a golpear el tronco con un palo. En ese momento, parecía que la habían poseído, ¡fue absolutamente gracioso! Entonces ocurrió la magia: Tió defecó regalos. Ella no lo podía creer.
Chilló de alegría mientras abría sus regalos y ayudaba a los demás a hacer que Tió hiciera sus necesidades. La noche se convirtió en un torbellino de risas, caos e intentos furtivos de agarrar el palo para tener otra oportunidad de sacarle más regalos a Tió. A las 3 a. m., finalmente decidimos que Tió se había ganado su descanso y lo enviamos de regreso al bosque, hasta la próxima Navidad.
Llevo celebrando el Tió de Nadal desde que tengo memoria, en casa, en la escuela, con amigos, pero esa noche, a través de los ojos de mi prima, finalmente entendí la magia. Desde entonces, el Tronco de Caca se ha convertido en el corazón de la celebración navideña de nuestra familia.
Veinticinco años después, mi marido y yo nos encontramos en Chicago, lejos de la familia, pero decididos a no perdernos la tradición. Para nuestra primera Navidad en la ciudad, elaboramos nuestro propio Tió.
No pasó mucho tiempo hasta que todos los que lo vieron se enamoraron. Pronto, los amigos comenzaron a pedir su propio Tió. Hicimos algunos para regalar, pero luego los amigos de nuestros amigos también comenzaron a pedirlos. Fue entonces cuando decidimos abrir nuestra tienda Etsy.
Pero no nos quedamos ahí. Nuestra misión de difundir el amor por las tradiciones navideñas catalanas sigue creciendo. Además del Tió de Nadal hecho a mano, ahora ofrecemos ropa y accesorios de nuestra propia marca, que celebran el humor y el encanto del Tió de Nadal. También hemos comenzado a importar caganers tradicionales: extravagantes figuras de belén que representan personajes famosos o gente común en, digamos, una pose muy natural: haciendo caca. Estas figuras atrevidas son una parte muy querida de los belenes catalanes, y simbolizan la humildad, la humanidad y un toque de humor durante la temporada navideña.
El Tió de Nadal, o el tronco que hace caca, ocupa un lugar especial en nuestros corazones. Es una tradición que nos comprometemos a preservar y compartir, ya sea en Cataluña, en los EE. UU. o incluso en Tombuctú.

It feels like just yesterday that I truly understood the magic of the Tió de Nadal. It was Christmas Eve, and my youngest cousin, only 2 years old, walked into my parents' living room. She was immediately fascinated by the smiling log with eyes staring back at her. And things only got better from there!
After teaching her the famous "Cagatió" song, she sang along with gusto and eagerly started hitting the log with a stick. In that moment, she looked like she’d been possessed—it was absolutely hilarious! Then the magic happened: Tió pooped presents. She couldn’t believe it.
She squealed with joy as she opened her gifts and helped everyone else make Tió poop theirs. The night turned into a whirlwind of laughter, chaos, and sneaky attempts to grab the stick for another chance to coax more gifts from Tió. By 3 a.m., we finally decided Tió had earned his rest and sent him back to the forest—until next Christmas.
I’ve been celebrating Tió de Nadal since I can remember—at home, at school, with friends—but that night, through my cousin’s eyes, I finally understood the magic. Since then, the Pooping Log has become the heart of our family’s Christmas celebration.
Fast forward 25 years, and my husband and I find ourselves in Chicago, far from family but determined not to miss out on the tradition. For our first Christmas in the city, we crafted our own Tió.
It didn’t take long for everyone who saw him to fall in love. Soon, friends started asking for their own Tió. We made a few as gifts, but then friends of friends started requesting them too. That’s when we decided to open our Etsy shop.
But we didn’t stop there. Our mission to spread the love for Catalan holiday traditions continues to grow. In addition to handcrafted Tió de Nadal, we now offer our own branded apparel and accessories—celebrating the humor and charm of the Pooping Log. We’ve also started importing traditional caganers: whimsical nativity figurines depicting famous characters or everyday people in, let’s say, a very natural pose—pooping. These cheeky figures are a beloved part of Catalan nativity scenes, symbolizing humility, humanity, and a touch of humor during the holiday season.
