About Mynoush

You will possibly see a correlation with manouches; the French word for bohemians and titans. My inspiration comes from ethnic cultures of course, but also from vintage. There is a correlation with "minouche", which is an (outdated) expression meaning "hands", mostly- little hands. This refers to the “petites mains” who are helpers in haute couture ateliers.

I like to blend and play with contrasts of all kinds: tailored/deconstructed, clean/frayed and dirty, bright colors/faded, peasant/sophisticated, raw fabrics/luxury fabrics. With a background in tailoring, I have an obsession with collars and details. Can you tell? ☺

I get bored very quickly, this why I mostly do “ooak” items.

My background:
While my mother was working very hard, my Grandmother raised me until I went off to school. My Grandmother learned to save, recycle, and upcycle everything, long before it was ever a ‘trend’. Mother told me that each season Grandmother received a batch of used clothes from her more fortunate cousins. However, my Grandmother was a very proud lady, and while she was grateful for the ‘hand-me-downs’, she decided to take the clothes apart at the seams, then re-piece them to update them, to transform them, and to make them more fashion forward. I can remember her crocheting dolls accessories using strips of colorful plastic bread bags! Grandmother was un-knitting and re-knitting a lot, and she loved crocheting and embroidering. All of this creating and work was done in her basement. Even now, I remember the noise of her Singer scissors on the big vintage ‘first wedding’ table, scrapping away, and the sound of her antique Singer sewing machine, busily working. Always working, creating, she had an infinite supply of patience to carry out long-term projects. I grew up silently beside her (though when I did speak-up, she lovingly dubbed me the "talking machine"). Most of the time I wandered off to a secluded part of her house were nobody ever went, only to become engrossed with a needle, a thread, and a piece of scrap fabric she’d given me to ‘play’ with.

My Father’s Mother worked many different businesses, from hairdressing to fast food restaurateur, to clothing design and manufacture. Currently, her business is in her basement, working alongside her two daughters and other employees. As a child, I remember visiting her house with my Father, when upon entering, we could see the dust and debris floating up in the air from her “basement workhouse”. The stairs were completely covered with thread and fabrics parts, the pieces and debris making their own ‘carpet’. Terrible, loud noises arose from the numerous sewing machines, so near to the others it was an incredibly deafening drone of cacophony. Piles of fabrics running wall-to-wall, up and down, and everywhere the eye could see. This Grandmother took weekly trips to Montreal, selling the clothes (for kids and uniforms). As a result she was always fashionable, bringing back with her the current high fashion trends to our very small, country town. Many women in my Father’s family had a talent for
hand making and art. This talent must have skipped a generation, because I'm the only one doing something with my hands ☺

When my mother, quite unsuccessfully, tried to put me in kindergarten, the only thing I wanted to do was draw and construct things. Other children seemed boring to me, as I needed to be off, doing my own thing, creating something. My early entry to school cannot be deemed a social success. I’d lived in a bubble, cut and formed from the others, with my imagination. Following age and experience, my art projects became more and more sophisticated, and unbelievably detailed. I’d won a few art prizes. At the end of high school, I told my parents I wanted to follow my studies in Art, and they were devastated. As fate would have it, through a competition I earned a three-year scholarship to a well-reputed private school. I followed this up with history of art, and then went back and got a fashion design diploma in high fashion (re: tailoring and hand finishing). I was proud to receive a medal of award during a competition in my very first semester.

I just want to create, with no rules, freely. Each thing I create is an adventure. I appreciate your looking, your favorites, and am always open to creating something special, just for you.

ACCURACY of PHOTOS: February UPDATE: please take in account that I do my very best to represent the true colors of my items by taking my photos outside in natural light,I use a fuji XT10 camera and no filter at all on etsy. My instagram photography work is not used on Etsy. Each monitors display photos differently. Thank you
I no longer do custom orders, but for very small projects I may accept. I work in a very limited space and as you can see I'm doing a large variety of projects and techniques, which reduce my possibilities of doing custom orders. I truly apologizes for that, but until I could build a new extension to my house it will stay like this.

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

I recieved many request for custom clothing orders. Unfortunatly, I can't take custom orders. I do not duplicate sold items, or make two items from different sizes. But, I do shorten straps, take a few inches on the sides to make pants or dresses smaller.
This is a question of organisation and space management.

For hats, I regularly add bunch of new hats so I invite you to come back to see if you can find the color you are searching for.

I do not take custom orders, I do clay once a year in summer. Next dreads beads will come in summer 2016.

Sizing details

I have customers all around the world with different sizing systems. This is why I choose to give key measures of the clothing I make. I could give you an approximation of the US size of cloth, because Im from Canada. But the best way to know if a piece will work for you is to take a similar clothing in your wardrobe and compare its measures to the one in my shop. You can send me your measures, it help. Always remember that you need extra inches to be able to move into a jacket, except for stretch tanks.

If you don't have a ribbon ruler, you can take a piece of thread, yarn of ribbon, non stretch, and report the measure on your flat ruler.

The WOOL I'm using

I live in Quebec, Canada. I only work with fiber from canadian farms, trying to encourage local farms as much as possible. I live near a large alpaca farm, so all my alpaca fiber is coming from there. I also work with others canadian farms to work with their fleeces, like angora goats for mohair, and sheeps for lincoln locks, cotswold, corriedale and romney. Im a big fan of textured yarn so I mostly spin directly for the locks to preserve their shape and show their natural beauty. I also dye myself all the yarn.
