Why this set?
This combination of flat chisels and fishtail gouges gives you a broad toolkit: the flat chisels for background surfaces, smoothing and leveling, and the fishtail gouges for carving relief, shaping curved surfaces, crisp ridges and reaching under overhangs. Ideal for relief carving, decorative carving, architectural elements, lettering and more.
Recommended Uses:
Relief carving (church icons, panels, décor)
Decorative mouldings and trim carving
Lettering and shallow relief work
Detail and finish carving after rough-out
Working in areas where a standard gouge is constrained (thanks to fishtail spread)
Care & Maintenance:
Keep tools dry, wipe clean after use.
Maintain sharp edge using a strop or fine stone; the high-carbon steel holds a good edge but benefits from periodic honing.
Re-oiling handle occasionally with light linseed oil to preserve wood.
Store in roll-case or tool tray to protect edges — consider adding blade guards if transporting.
Avoid using on metal or stone substrates; designed for wood carving.
