An illustration from "The History of Witches and Wizards" by Francis Bragge, published in 1720. The engraving depicts a devil handing out poppets (a small doll or effigy used in sympathetic magic) to a group of witches.

It is typical of the way witches were portrayed in popular culture during the 17th and 18th centuries. At this time, there was a widespread belief in witchcraft and the supernatural, and witches were often seen as malevolent figures who consorted with the devil and engaged in dark and sinister practices.

This piece provides a fascinating insight into the popular beliefs and attitudes of the time, and remains a classic example of the witchcraft iconography that was prevalent in European art and literature during the early modern period.

Overall, I really liked this print and the other 3 witchy/devil prints I got for my place. They were ready to hang and have a great aesthetic, even better that they are based on real historical block prints. My one con is that the background paint or lacquer is quite a bit darker than in the photos. On all 4 that I bought, I expected it to look like a slightly aged parchment or rag-paper color, but it is closer to a gold or brass color with a visible metallic sheen to it. While my room's color scheme can accommodate it, I was hoping for a brighter look overall.
