'Peace to Your Home!'
These simple words are known worldwide.
Having a Belarusan background, I can state that in our region, no generation has lived without war.

The Belarusans believe that embroidery is a form of prayer; indeed, all their stitched items bear encoded protective symbols, serving as amulets. Many were made as offerings for local churches.

The protective role of embroidered items was particularly evident during times of national tribulations such as war, epidemics or crop failures. In Belarus, there was a tradition of making the One-day Oblation. It was a stitched protective ritual item known as ‘roushnik’ (towel) that must be completed by a group of women in no more than 24 hours.
Such items typically had arbitrary, unbalanced designs and appeared somewhat ‘scrappy’ as each stitcher added her own prayers and wishes.

For my Peace to Your Home! design, I incorporated symbols of home, family, ‘Berahinia’ (Guardian Lady) and protection; all these embody my prayers for peace and well-being in our homes.
