Setting Reference Sheet Printable | Fiction Writer Location Template | Novel Worldbuilding Worksheet

Most setting worksheets stop at description. This one tracks how a location changes across the hours your story visits it.

The Setting Reference Sheet is a deep-dive reference for the locations your story returns to, not a one-time description, but a working record of how each place shifts in mood, occupancy, and use across the hours your story visits it. Built for the recurring settings that carry real narrative weight: the tavern your cast keeps returning to, the family home, the street outside the precinct.

What's Inside

8 full-page location entries, each with its own Sensory Signature, Baseline Mood & Function, and Time-of-Day Variations sections

A front-matter Location Index for fast navigation once your reference fills in

A dedicated field for the one sensory detail that couldn't belong to any other setting in your novel

A 4-period Time-of-Day Variations table (Morning, Midday, Evening/Dusk, Night) tracking atmosphere, who's present, and what happens at each

Fields separating a location's baseline emotional register from its narrative function, why this place exists in your story, not just what it looks like

Before You Start guidance grounded in Becca Puglisi and Angela Ackerman's setting-thesaurus approach to sensory specificity

Recurring settings do real narrative work, they shift with the story the same way characters do. This reference keeps that shift consistent from the first draft to the last revision, instead of relying on memory for how a place felt three chapters ago.
