Fresh Fair Trade Bourbon Vanilla beans from Madagascar.

Bypassing middlemen and corporations, the profits from these beans go directly to the Vanilla farmer who benefits from every step of their preparation.

The past few years investors and brokers, working with full government support have increased their profit margin at the expense of the Vanilla farmers. Nowadays many farmers can no longer make ends meet with Vanilla sales alone and are forced to seek either employment elsewhere or cultivation of different crops to support themselves.

While traditionally, Vanilla farmers would harvest each bean according get to its ripeness over a period of many weeks, now they have only a one week window to harvest and deliver all the Vanilla beans to the brokers.
This not only affects the quality and size of beans which would bring the farmers a premium price, but it takes the curing and processing of the beans out of there hands drastically reducing their income from Vanilla.

Brokers have taken over the processing of the green beans using cheap unskilled labour to increase the profit they make from Vanilla
Understandably Vanilla farmers are not happy with this new arrangement and many can no longer support themselves with their Vanilla crop.

These Vanilla beans are harvested individually according to their ripeness, and fully processed by the farmer in the traditional manner. I purchased them directly from the farmer, bypassing the middlemen and brokers ensuring a fair price for the farmer in a market that has been hijacked.

As depicted in the photo, one measure of a Vanilla bean's quality is whether you can wrap it around your finger without it breaking. This is an indication of the moisture content. Vanilla beans should always be kept in an airtight container to maintain their freshness and humidity level.
