This cowl was created as part of the Initiate Knit Design Challenge, hosted by Francoise Danoy of Aroha Knits. The goal of the challenge was to help people get their design ideas off the ground, and this super-bulky lace and cable cowl was the result!

The cowl is worked in the round, with garter stitch edging and the Snowdrop Cable and Lace Pattern forming the body of the cowl.
The yarn used in the pattern is Blue Sky Fibers Bulky, which is 50% alpaca, 50% wool. It is classified as a super-bulky, so for substitution purposes, you’ll want to double most yarns if you want to knit this in anything below a bulky-weight. Also, if you’re substituting yarns, I’d suggest a yarn with at least 50% wool content.

Pattern Notes:

The Snowdrop and Cable Lace Pattern is both written and charted; this pattern also has an accessible large print option that is compatible with screen-reading software -- this version includes the written instruction.

Note that gauge is not specifically important to this pattern, though changes in gauge will affect the amount of yarn used and the size of the final project.

Also please note that if you are a loose knitter, or are enlarging the pattern in any way, you may require an additional skein of recommended yarn.

Pattern Sizing:

Circumference: 24.75 inch (63 cm) circumference
Height: 8.5 inches (21.5 cm) from cast on to cast off edge.

Materials Required:
135 yards (124 meters) of bulky yarn. Sample is knit in Blue Sky Fibers Bulky (50% wool, 50% alpaca).
6 mm (US 10) circular needle (or size needed to obtain gauge).
1 stitch marker
Tapestry/darning needle
Cable Needle

Gauge for pattern:
12 sts and 15 rows = 4 inches square in Stocking Stitch.
13 sts and 17 rows = 4 inches square in Pattern Stitch.

Techniques Used:
decreases: k2tog, k2togtbl, ssk
increases: yarn over
twisted stitches: ktbl
long-tail cast on
stretchy bind off using k2togtbl
working cables with a cable needle
working in the round
