sustainable wood, natural glue from an old fashioned heated pot, natural shellac, pure beeswax

Dove's Tail Eco Urns are a unique and respectful way to honour your loved one. Urns are carefully designed with that aim in mind. They serve burial, scattering and keepsake purposes.

Each urn is fully biodegradable - without sacrificing beauty or function. There are no plastics or other non-natural substance, just four ingredients:
1) sustainably sourced wood;
2) old-fashioned natural glue made up in a pot and applied hot, just like old-time artisans
used in what we now call antiques;
3) pure shellac, a beautiful natural finish which is created by lac bugs; and
4) pure beeswax; OR
5) unfinished.

This version features:
-Sliding lid
-Unique closing mechanism with wooden spring catch that unlocks with a key if you need to open the urn (eg for scattering)
-Comes with standard liner (100% recycled kraft paper with sisal or jute tie) (see 4th photo)
-Premium tightly-woven organic cotton artisan-made liner is available for an additional cost (see 3rd photo). Since the urns have to open, they have seams. The liners help contain the cremains and replaces the plastic bags commonly supplied by crematoriums. The premium liner gives you the option of burying your loved one in the liner and keeping the urn for reuse or to hold keepsakes.
-Primary wood: red oak rescued from a tree that had the misfortune to grow too big next to the cottage of friends
-Also shown & available in birch (5th photo) and pine (6th photo)

Dimensions (external) approx. 10.5" x 6.75" x 5.5" Holds the cremains of a person with a body weight up to approximately 229 lbs (based on 1 lb per square inch ) . Custom sizes available.

Urns can be personalized and customized for an additional charge and with sufficient notice. Contact me to discuss your wishes for your loved one. Here are some ideas:
custom size
carved lettering, plain or gilded
religious symbols in wood, carving, gold leaf, marquetry
Celtic cross, carved
Celtic knot, carved
dragonfly, in contrasting wood and mother-of-pearl
breaching whale, carved
compass rose, in marquetry
mayflowers (trailing arbutus), carved
mounting (temporarily or otherwise) a piece of jewelry or other object

Responsibly sourced wood: I am often given trees people are cutting down or saving from firewood. The wood is harvested near me or is wood recovered from other purposes, eg leftover bits from furniture commissions. I co-own a wood lot we are restoring to an ecologically sound Acadian forest.

For free pick up or delivery within Halifax Regional Municipality, NS, select the "$0.00" option under shipping upgrades.

Responsible packaging: recycled and recyclable boxes, reused packaging when available.

Artisan made, significantly by hand. Qualities like nice dovetails and a good finish come from hand tools and skills.

Pet urns available.

I invite you to visit my website at mayflowerwood.com to see my other work.

Processing time: I typically need less than 1 day to process your order if no customization is involved.

Estimated shipping times: I'll do my best to meet the shipping estimates, but can't guarantee them. Actual delivery time will depend on the shipping method you choose, your location, and other factors.

Buffing the natural beeswax finish will generally remove any scuffs. If you keep the urn long term, and if ever the finish needs to be freshened-up, you can apply a thin coat of beeswax or other natural wax, and then buff according to product instructions.
If there's a little moisture in the air ar the time of any outdoor event, the urn should be fine, but avoid exposure to steady rain if you want to keep the urn in good condition. The beeswax will bead water but is not "waterproof." The non-toxic biodegradable glue is water soluable. The joinery is tight enough that it can hold by friction.
We would be happy to make Dove's Tail Eco Urns available on a wholesale basis. Please contact.
We follow, "reduce, reuse, recycle," in that order.

Padding/protection: (1) We first reuse any appropriate padding that has been sent to us by others, and ask that you in turn reuse or recycle as appropriate. That can include plastics like bubble wrap, unless you request otherwise. (2) Blank newspaper (recycled) is used to wrap the urn and scrunched to make padding as needed, supplemented by reused corrugated cardboard.

Shipping box: 100% recycled corrugated cardboard, according to the manufacturer. We don't reuse boxes because every variation in size would change the shipping estimate, inevitably costing you more.
Returns and exchanges: You need to let us know promptly after delivery; if not, we cannot except returns or exchanges. The goods must be returned unused, given the nature of the product, and in resaleable condition. Return/exchange shipping is at the cost of the buyer.
Wood has variations of colour and grain. As an ecologically friendly product, It can have knots and other features in all of nature's replendent glory and that don't effect the use. The pictures show samples; yours will vary accordingly.

These are handcrafted items made by an artisan in a small shop. While the urn is hand planed, scraped, and/or sanded, we deliberately leave some tool marks asa part of the essential character of the work. For example, and as you can see looking at many antiques, when dovetails are laid out by hand it is customary to leave the base lines formed by a knife or guage.

Natural beeswax is not as refined as modern wax compounds. It gives a reasonably consistent finish and sheen.
We will work with you to try to solve any problem to your satisfation. We don't expect that anything will go horribly wrong with your purchase. But if it should happend that the goods arrive damaged, destroyed, late or not at all, or if you are dissatisfied for any other reason, you agree that our liability is limited to a refund of what you spend for the product plus actual shipping costs.
You have 14 days from receipt to return the product, unless the product has been customized or personalized. The other policies for return still apply, including the need for the product to be returned in resaleable condition and unused.
