Description

During our trip to Vancouver Island last fall to visit my friend's sister in Port McNeill, we spent a day on Sointula Island. Closer to the end of our exploration we drove past this beach to get some photos of the cruise ship coming in, and spotted this driftwood standing guard all by itself on the beach. Upon investigation it looked like it had once been a tree growing there. The roots were holding it upright and there is was, still standing vigilant long after death. I liked how the elements had worn the wood smooth and bleached it. It reminded me of the trees Lawren Harris painted along the shore of Lake Superior later in his career. Simplified forms in a simplified landscape with dramatic lighting; so I guess this is my homage to those pieces, and the mood they created.
