I always tell people that I find jewellery making meditative. It's a time to turn on my music and disappear into a sheet of metal, coil of wire, or contemplate the mysteries of a gemstone. That's until something goes wrong, or I can't find the tool I need. Then I inevitably have a tantrum and start swearing like a sailor.
But none of that feverish negativity goes into the jewellery! The metal is my therapy. I choose each piece of metal or gem with care. More care than Lay's uses to choose its potatoes, and let me tell you, that's a lot of care. Then I apply my meticulous nature to handcrafting a one-of-a-kind piece of art.
My metal is all sawn out, sanded and filed by hand. I set my gemstones with loving care. When I make a chain, each link is a little story, often one that includes tribulation, frustration, and ultimately, triumph.
Polishing and finishing take up the last part of the piece, and when I get the resources, I'm going to train a small monkey to do all that for me. But for now it's all me, sitting in my little workshop, sketching a new design that, with a lot of love, a ton of articulate attention, and a few hours, will become a piece of wearable art.
