Handmade goods from the Yukon Territory

Announcement    I'm Amy Kenny - the one-woman crew behind AmyKny.

I live in Canada's Yukon Territory, where I make leather and metal jewelry and accessories. I mention that because geography is important to every piece in this shop.

I like the things I make to have a narrative element, even if that narrative is only obvious to me. I think this owes partly to the fact that the things I most like to make are stories. (I’ve been a journalist for about 13 years and am currently finishing a master of fine arts in creative writing.)

Often that narrative focuses in some way on the interplay between physical and human geography. The experience of place figures prominently in my work, which aims to convey a specific sense of location.

A lot of my pieces are small and simple, but sometimes I go wild and work on bigger, sculptural pieces – necklaces that might as well be armour, or wallets, purses and packs that wrap around your hips and leg like you’re a gunslinger.

Either way, these are tough, functional pieces meant to act as amulets that bring people closer to the places and spaces they miss, or long to get to.
