The Story Behind Angela’s DIY Designs
The Seed
My love for sewing and quilting was planted at eight years old when my grandma gifted me a sewing machine. Together, my grandma and I attended a week-long kids’ quilt camp, where I made my very first quilt: a pinwheel quilt. Quilt camp quickly became a summer tradition. Each year I returned, eager to learn new techniques, create a diverse array of quilts, and steward the creativity God gave me. Outside of camp, I found joy in sewing baby quilts and quilts for Quilts of Valor to bring comfort to others.
The Storm
In 2020, during my high school years, life took an unexpected turn. The world slowed to a halt with COVID, quilt camp was canceled, and I suffered a severe elbow injury that brought constant pain. Activities that had once been central to my life—quilting, tennis, piano, and crafting—were suddenly out of reach. After countless doctor visits, MRIs, and physical therapy, there were no clear answers. Progress felt distant within the conventional medical system. Yet even during this season, what appeared to be a series of setbacks ultimately became a period of preparation.
The Roots
That summer, I was invited to attend an adult quilt camp, after being recognized for skills that could rival those of experienced quilters. The theme for the camp was equilateral triangles, but I felt inspired to create something beyond the suggested patterns. With watermelon on my mind (my favorite food and a shape that fit the theme perfectly), I searched for a pattern that matched my vision. When I couldn’t find one, I decided to create it myself. After sketching, testing, and refining, I pieced together a prototype watermelon block. This moment marked the beginning of my DIY (do-it-yourself) journey, and Angela’s DIY Designs was born.
The Sprout
While sewing my watermelon blocks at the camp, the response was overwhelmingly encouraging. Experienced quilters were eager to know where they could find the pattern. When I shared that I had designed it myself, they encouraged me to write and sell it. I spent the remainder of the summer figuring out how to write clear, easy-to-follow quilt patterns, complete with detailed instructions and color diagrams, something I deeply valued after navigating confusing patterns in the past.
The Bloom
In 2022, I launched my Etsy shop, and sold my very first pattern, the Watermelon Patch Quilt Pattern. Since then, I’ve designed patterns featuring animals, fruit, and playful patchwork designs, including sloths, tigers, lions, dogs, tropical birds, ice cream, and jack-o-lanterns. I’ve sold patterns at regional quilt shows and spoken at quilt camps and guilds to inspire others. In 2024, my quilt Patchwork Paradise won first place in the youth category at the Common Threads Quilt Show. My patterns are now available in local quilt shops, and my business has continued to grow alongside my life as a busy student. Throughout this journey, God led me into a deeper relationship with Him and toward true healing. Through that process, I developed a passion for holistic health, which ultimately helped restore my body and strengthened my desire to share hope and healing with others. I also discovered a deep love for pattern design, which allows my ideas to come to life while empowering other quilters to create their own beautiful projects. Because of this passion, I recently began offering one-on-one pattern design sessions for custom quilt blocks.
The Future
Through every season, God has sewn my story together, piece by piece. Angela’s DIY Designs exists to glorify God, serve others, and create beauty with purpose. I create for my Creator. I design for my Designer. As my story continues to unfold, I’m excited to see where God leads me next! My prayer is that my designs bring joy, inspiration, and encouragement to your life. Thank you for being here and for being part of what He is growing!
