About

Capture Nature

When I was 11, my father introduced me to working with my hands. We lived in Northern Quebec where my father worked at a lumber mill. My father always had a passion for woodworking. A side porch with 3 walls and a roof was what he made into his first wood workshop.  It was 5′ X 16′, just wide enough for a small workbench and shelves that held his hand tools, a skill saw, belt sander and router. Within those three walls, he made a complete bedroom suite, a dining room hutch, a kitchen pedestal table and four dining room chairs, all out of solid oak.  All in that small side porch. We still use that furniture today. I remember the wood shaving rolling off the hand plane and wondering if I ever could make them curl like he did!
Eventually my father started his own furniture business, which became a cabinet-making business. I worked with him before I decided to move to Toronto. I tried doing a few other jobs since I was “not going to be like Dad.” A few years later, I was looking for work and talking to my Dad on the phone about what to do.  He simply said with a supportive but direct tone, “You are very capable with your hands Son, why don’t you look for a wood working position?” It’s from that moment on, I had this desire to work again with my hands, creating and crafting what I consider to be wood art. I worked for two shops in Toronto before eventually owning my own. Due to family circumstances, we had to move our cabinet business further north to Mono, Ontario, and my father and I joined forces again. We worked together until August 2012 when he lost his fight with cancer.
He taught me to teach myself, to always push my limits, to expand my craftsmanship.  I will forever cherish our time indulging our passion of taking one of natures great gifts, milling, shaping, bending, crafting wood into true works of art!  A joy is mine every time the sole of my plane glides across a slab of wood allowing long curly shavings to flow out from its throat, it takes me back to that trailer porch, where Dad’s love of woodworking was born in me. My father's inspiration and my desire to capture the essence of nature through woodwork is where Betzy Wood Art stemmed from. I hope you enjoy.
