Jewelry Designs inspired by a Ghanian sense of style

in 2011 my husband went to Ghana for an entirely different reason and began work with a women's group in the village of Taha. He began to build a mill for them to process Shea Butter for sale and export and given that I ran a bath and body manufacturing company for 13 years, I offered to help him out.

On a three week visit, I met with the women and fell in love with their effortless beauty. The seemingly random combination of patterns and colours is hard not to appreciate. Being a textile artists in me earlier life , I spent a lot of time in the markets during that three week period, drooling over the patterns, trying to develop and idea to incorporate their sense of beauty into my life in Canada. It wasn't until I was on my way back home when in the Accra airport I bought my first piece of Ghanian powdered glass jewellery-and I was suddenly hooked!

Now we are bringing the beads over on a regular basis. No two strands are alike. I have also been inspired to incorporate the randomness of Ghana style into my own jewellery creations recently and continue to grow as a crafts person and artist.

A portion of all sales from Big Blue Moma goes back to help the women in Taha with their Shea Butter mill.
