About BlueRibbonCarvings

Sales 5
On Etsy since 2017

Original, one-of-a-kind wood carvings that range widely in style, complexity and subject matter.

Why "Blue Ribbon Carvings"? It's because every carving displayed here has won one or more First-in-Class (and often higher) awards at prominent carving competitions in Ontario, New England, and/or the Maritime Provinces. (In one show, the first-place ribbons are actually red, but blue is the usual.) For each listing, I give a short rundown of its awards.

Since I started competing in 2012 my carvings have won a drawerful of ribbons, including 4 Best-of-Show, 2 Second-Best-of-Show, 6 Third-Best-of-Show, 4 Best-of-Theme, 4 Purchase Awards, and 110 First-in-Class (sometimes called First-in-Category).

Most colleagues consider me an expert carver who also happens to be highly creative, and I compete wherever possible at the Masters level. I'm good too with a drawing pencil, meaning I can conceive, design and carve whatever strikes me as an interesting project. It also means I can satisfy most special carving requests and commissions from customers.

So I operate differently from most carvers. Instead of restricting myself to birds or fish or caricatures or any of the usual wood carving specialties, I'll try them all, with results that often more than match those of the carving specialists. And no matter what the subject, originality is my guiding light.

Also unlike most carvers, I come at the business from the artistic side rather than from a strong interest in birdwatching or fishing or taxidermy. Prior to carving, I did fine-art drawings, book illustrations, courtroom sketching for CBC and ATV, cartoons by the hundreds, and other art-related work. I believe my longstanding "artsy" side shows up in everything I carve, even in my fully detailed, realistic birds and fish, where the intent is to copy nature as faithfully as possible rather than pursue artistic self-expression. There can be art in nature's imitation.

I must also proudly point out that I am a juried member of Craft NB, formerly known as the New Brunswick Craft Council.
