From Crisis to Craft: The Birth of Chaak Design
Chaak Design began during one of the most uncertain times the world has seen — the COVID pandemic.
I had recently graduated from NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) when the world came to a standstill. During my academic project visits to nearby villages and artisan clusters, I witnessed something that deeply moved me. Skilled artisans — especially women — who had inherited generations of craft knowledge were struggling to survive. With no regular orders and no access to markets, their livelihoods were at risk.
That moment became the beginning of Chaak.
The word “Chaak” is inspired by the charkha — a symbol of self-reliance, continuity, and nurturing India from its roots. I started Chaak Design with a simple yet powerful vision: to provide artisans with consistent work, fair income, and dignity, while bringing handcrafted, meaningful products to modern homes.
We work closely with artisan clusters in nearby regions, choosing them intentionally so we can build long-term relationships, ensure ethical practices, and support local communities — with a special focus on empowering women artisans.
Every piece at Chaak Design is handcrafted with care, patience, and purpose. Slight variations are not flaws; they are proof of human hands, heritage, and heart. When you choose Chaak Design, you are not just buying a product — you are becoming part of a story that supports craftsmanship, sustains livelihoods, and celebrates India’s timeless art.
