Cognitive Surplus makes designer science gifts using sustainable materials.

Cognitive Surplus was started in 2013 by Kristen and Geoff Zephyrus to celebrate the intersection of science and design (Kristen is the science-nerd, Geoff does the designing). We are proudly based in Portland, Oregon.

We are fascinated by and curious about the science in the world around us. We love everything from physics jokes to the exquisite beauty of early scientific etchings and illustrations. We’re inspired by a sense of wonder for our universe and a desire to look closer. Everything from gazing up at the night sky to the way magnets work is both intriguing and a little magical, and we hope that we’re able to share some of our excitement through our designs.

We got started making science products in a little apartment in NYC because we had been searching for an elegant gift for Kristen's science teacher mom, and kept being disappointed by the things we found on the market. One day, we picked up a periodic table shower curtain only to find that had some very unfortunate mistakes (it listed Carbon as a noble gas - the horror!), and thought we could do better - so we got to work.

The first things we came up with were pretty rough, and since neither of us had a background in business or product design, we just had to figure it out one piece at a time, working iteratively to make improvements to our designs and our process. Since our start in 2013 Cognitive Surplus has grown from our little side-project to a shop that supports not only Geoff and Kristen full-time, but now also a small and wonderful team.

All of our designing, prototyping, and some light production is done in Portland, Oregon. For the full production runs of products, we source from manufacturers both in the United States and internationally in order to create the highest quality products.

We have built an inclusive workplace that supports a diverse group of awesome people, and we are proud to offer different shaped doors for adults with a range of disabilities to work in our company. To read more, check out our blog.

We are completely committed to making environmentally conscious choices within our company and in our own lives. More on our green initiatives can be found here:

Wholesale availability

If you have a retail shop and are interested in wholesale, you can find our linesheet on Etsy Wholesale or on our website. If you have any questions, please email us at!

When will I get my order?

Orders shipping to the USA typically take 1-3 days to be processed and shipped out from our warehouse and then shipping times vary between 1-7 days depending on how far your package is going.

Orders shipping internationally typically take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to arrive depending on how long it takes to process through customs. If you think your order should have arrived but it hasn't, please check with your local post office as sometimes packages are held there if VAT taxes are due. Any taxes due at the time your order arrives are your responsibility. Please do your research before ordering so you are not surprised.

Do you ship overseas and how long will it take?

We ship to all countries! When you get to checkout, Etsy will calculate the cost of shipping your package to your address. Shipping times vary based on the country and shipping method.

First Class International: 7 days to a month+
• No tracking info after package departs the USA

Priority Mail International: 6-10 days
• Tracking number is valid all the way to your door

If your country charges VAT taxes, those fees are your responsibility. Please make sure to check your local tax rate on imported goods so you're not surprised when your order arrives.

We are not responsible for delays or for packages that go missing once they depart this country.

How much does shipping cost? (And how can I get free shipping?)

Shipping costs depend on the destination and weight of your order. Rates are calculated at checkout, so go ahead and put the items you'd like in your cart and input your address to see how much it will cost. Orders over $75 that are shipping within the USA qualify for free shipping if you use the coupon code 'dividebyzero' at checkout.

Could I get a different kind of paper in my notebook?

Please refer to our Learn Beautifully page here: to see what paper types are available for which cover designs. At this time we aren't able to offer customization requests for the inner page style, but if there's something you're burning to have, please let us know so we can keep it in mind for future development!

Can I get faster shipping overseas?

We can ship your order via DHL, which takes 2-3 days to pretty much any country. For most countries, this method usually costs just a few dollars more than Priority Mail International. Etsy doesn't have a calculated DHL shipping options, so if you're interested in this shipping method, please check out with Priority Mail International and leave a note in the notes field that you'd like a quote for DHL. If the shipping is pretty close, we'll upgrade you for free. If it's a lot more expensive, you can decide if you'd like to pay the additional or not. DHL is the most secure and guaranteed way to get your package. If anything goes wrong, you're covered.

Is there a cheaper international shipping option?

Unfortunately, we do not set the prices for the postal service (we wish we did!) Shipping costs are calculated by weight at checkout to automatically provide you with First Class and Priority Mail International pricing options at checkout. First Class International is the cheapest option we have at our disposal.
