Announcement   After finishing art school in 1978 , Baird spent two years as a graphic artist and has been painting full time and traveling ever since. Following a two year stint traveling and painting in Europe, he returned to Canada and began promoting and selling his art in various galleries. He completed several "theme exhibitions", - a series of works revolving around one particular subject ("Newfoundland", "Carny", "Night Vision", and "For the Love of the Game"). In 1994 he published a series of images in poster and lithograph format entitled "The Baseball Collection". His work was used in 1994 a the cover concept for the Major League Baseball All-Star Program and he was also commissioned by the National Basketball Association to do a piece for the opening of there new NBA store in New York City.
For the last ten years Baird has been working solely with acrylics. He has developed a style of "contemporary realism" using a combination of specific areas of detail juxtaposed against larger backgrounds that often feature "big brush" subtle squares of different tones. Set against the dramatic backdrop of light and shadow of the mean streets of Havana, Cuba, his new series of larger pieces represents the beautiful decay of daily life, and the daily struggle. These works are not only bold and exciting, but are also historical documents of a country and city on the verge of imminent change...To see all the artist's work, please visit www.dwightbaird.com
