Handcrafted, Heirloom Quality Lamps

From an early age I enjoyed making things and at school I loved Industrial Arts class. As a young man I hoped to become a true craftsman; to make things of enduring quality. I wasn’t sure which craft to pursue, as I had many interests, and a series of “real” jobs supported my family while consuming many years of my life.

In 2002 I started my own business providing services to the home construction and renovation industry. As time permitted I studied and began to practice the art of blacksmithing so that in 2009 I had fully transformed this enterprise into Rio Bravo Ironworks located in Elora, Ontario providing custom, hand forged ornamental ironwork.

I also set about to learn the ancient art of lost wax casting. I now use this process to cast small bronze and aluminum objects and figures in a variety of subjects as dictated by my muses; past and present.

I can’t pinpoint the origins of my attraction to the aesthetics of the Bungalow, Craftsman and Arts & Crafts architectural styles. Perhaps it was the many homes of these styles in the neighbourhood of my youth; perhaps some fixtures and features of my grandparents’ house where I played as a child. In any case, as a practicing metal smith these styles now came to be reflected in my work. At the same time I began to appreciate and understand the beauty of light; both natural and man-made. The Elora Craftsman Lamps had come to life.

These are my original designs; not reproductions. The shapes and dimensions closely reflect the lamps of the early twentieth century and I try to use methods and materials suggestive of that era; most importantly the natural mica sheets used in the lamp shades. My hope is that each item I create will be cherished by it’s owners, today and in future generations.
