Welcome to the home of HISTORY HOUSE authentic antique patterns and other treasures of costume history! Please take a moment to read below for important information, and see the "FAQs" at the very bottom of this page. Thank you for your visit and your continued patronage of my shop!
DOWNLOADING FROM ETSY: Etsy's PDF downloading does not work through the Etsy App on mobile devices. You'll need to access your PDF files using a regular browser. If you have any difficulty, contact me, and I'll email your PDF files to you.
Here's the link to Etsy's info on PDF downloads: https://help.etsy.com/hc/en-us/articles/115013328108?segment=shopping
OPENING DOWNLOADED PDFs: History House patterns are NOT "Instant Print" -- they need to be opened with the Adobe Reader (a free, widely available PDF reader). Once you've downloaded your purchased PDF files, please read the Printing Instructions included with the download. Make sure you're opening the files with ADOBE READER, not with another PDF reader. See FAQs at the bottom of this page for important details.
BEFORE YOU BUY: The Adobe Reader is used around the world and is compatible with most computer operating systems ("OS"). It's already loaded on many computers. But we can't guarantee that Adobe's features will work on every possible OS (especially the very latest MACs). You can easily check to see if Adobe is available for your OS -- just copy the URL below into your browser, go to that Adobe page, then click on the drop-down list of operating systems. If your OS is on the list, then Adobe will work with it:
https://get.adobe.com/reader/otherversions/
PAPER PATTERNS: are available (to the U.S.A. only) for selected designs. The sewing instructions for these will be provided to you digitally (PDF) upon purchase, and then the pattern itself will be printed on full-size paper and shipped to your address. Please note these cannot be shipped to a P.O. Box address, see FAQs at the bottom of this page for more information.
In 2019, "Edwardian Rose" patterns were renamed "HISTORY HOUSE Antique Patterns". The name has changed but the patterns are the same.
PRINTING AT HOME:
History House PDF patterns are intended as print-at-home patterns, on letter-size (8-1/2" x 11") or A4 paper. They can also be printed on wide format (36") paper by print shops. They are not specifically designed for A0 paper, although some print shops may be able to do this as a custom job -- check with your print supplier to be sure.
Full printing instructions come with every PDF pattern. Or try one of the digital printing services -- see FAQs below.
I accept a limited number of orders for custom-made garments from the antique patterns in my shop, or others. Message me or use the "Request a Custom Order" link.
Add my shop to your "Favourites", and please check back again! Visit our website for blog, updates, news, articles and research on costume history: www.thefashionarchaeologist.com.

5 out of 5 starsUpdated review: Patricia was kind enough to respond and explain why these particular patterns are configured this way. It totally makes sense now, the scalability factor prevails. Updating to 5 stars. Thank you, Patricia, for being so on top of these things! The pattern is great, instructions easy to follow, however the way that it is scaled and printed doesn't allow you to reprint just one of the pages (like after your dog eats one). You have to reprint the entire file, since it's printed as a poster.

4 out of 5 starsMarkings on the pattern are quite clear, which makes up for the inconsistencies of when there are seam allowances already included vs not.
The Fashion Archaeologist responded on 04 Mar, 2023
By way of clarification, some seam allowances are included (drawn in) on many History House patterns, but only where seams or edges are common to all sizes in a pattern. This is intended as a helpful timesaver for the user, especially for more complex patterns such as this one, so that seams or edges that are the same for all sizes can be quickly cut out, without having to manually mark in allowances. I'm sorry that this seemed inconsistent, but it is explained in the Sewing Instructions and, as noted above, is clearly marked on the pattern. This pattern is rated as a "moderately advanced" design.

5 out of 5 starsI haven't made this dress yet. I will be making a mock up first. But was totally impressed by the detail in the directions and all the historical details. Can't wait to get started. And loved that you can order a paper copy!!!!

Frequently asked questions
Can paper versions of patterns be shipped to a P.O. Box address?
No. Unfortunately my U.S. shipping partner uses UPS (United Parcel Service), who will only deliver to actual street addresses. I am not able to change their shipping policy.
I'm in the U.S. but have a P.O. Box address. Can I still buy a paper pattern?
Yes, but you'll need to message me with an actual street address for delivery. This can be your own address, or that of someone you trust to receive your parcel. If I don't hear from you within 2 days with a street address, I'll have to refund and cancel your order.
If my order is cancelled and refunded because I only have a P.O. Box address, can I come back later to buy when I have a street address for delivery?
Absolutely! I'd love to have you return!
I'd rather not print my PDF pattern at home. Are there other options?
Yes, there are! First, you can check if one of your local office suppliers (such as Staples, Kinkos, FedEx), are able to print your pattern on a wide format (36" wide) printer.
Alternatively, you can use an online (digital) pattern printing service, such as pdfplotting.com. Check their website for details and pricing.
In North America, most print shops will print on 36" wide paper. History House PDF patterns are not specifically designed to be printed on A0 size (U.K./Euro) paper -- please see FAQ further on.
What if a local print shop refuses to print my PDF pattern due to copyright restrictions?
Please contact me here on Etsy. I'll provide you with a message that includes a limited copying licence which you can print out and take along with you to the print shop.
I'm in the process of adding this permission to all existing patterns, but that work will take some time. In the meantime, feel free to message me directly.
I want to print my PDF pattern on A4 size paper. How do I do this?
If you are in Europe or other countries that use A4 size paper, please see pages 3 and 4 of the printing instructions included in your Etsy download package, entitled "How to Print Your PDF Pattern at Home". Feel free to contact me with any further questions.
Can I just open a History House PDF pattern and hit "PRINT".
No, all PDF History House patterns are designed to be opened with the widely available, free Adobe Reader software, where you'll need to select a couple of options before printing.
Full, step-by-step printing instructions are included with every PDF pattern, and the printing process is quick and simple.
Can I have a PDF History House pattern printed on A0 (U.K./European size) paper?
History House PDF patterns are designed to be printed on 8-1/2" x 11" (North American standard letter-size) or A4 (European/UK letter size) paper, or else on wide-format (36" wide) continuous paper.
Some print shops MAY have software that will allow them to adjust their equipment to print History House PDF patterns on A0 size paper, but you'll need to discuss this with your print supplier.
However, all History House patterns can be printed on standard wide-format (36" wide) continuous paper. There are many companies in the U.S. and Canada who offer this, both for in-person services, and more recently online. See "pdfplotting.com" for a digital printing service in the U.S. that I recommend.
I'm having trouble downloading the PDF pattern I bought.
Are you trying to download to a mobile device, or are you using the Etsy App? At this time, Etsy's download system does NOT support mobile downloads (for their own technical reasons). You'll need to use a regular browser (like MS Edge or Google Chrome) to download.
If you don't have a PC or laptop to download to, please get in touch with me through Etsy messages, and I'll manually email the PDF files to you.
If you're having any other problem with downloading, don't hesitate to contact me!
See this link for info on Etsy's downloading system for PDFs:

I'm trying to open my PDF download from Etsy -- Why am I only seeing a blank page instead of the PDF pattern?
You may be trying to open an Etsy PDF download with a generic "PDF reader" (such as the one Microsoft pre-installs on some of its newer laptops). In that case, all you'll see will be a blank page.
This is because "generic" PDF readers don't have all the capabilities of Adobe. The "generic" PDF readers are often pre-set as the DEFAULT reader on many newer laptops (which you may not be aware of).
To solve the problem, first be sure you have Adobe Reader on your laptop or PC. If not, go to adobe.com and upload the programme.
Then open Adobe, look for the PDF file you want, and open it.
To be sure that your PDFs will always be opened by Adobe and not by a built-in "generic" reader, re-set Adobe as your default PDF reader.
