The Ecology of Bicycling

FreeLander Bicycles is on a mission to reduce the amount of waste created by the bicycle industry on a local level and up-cycle usable items into bicycle accessories thus diverting them from the landfill.

We take old bicycle seats and handlebars and create art from them. Our taxidermy is meant to reflect your ecological values and love of bicycling. We take great pride in the look and affordability of our taxidermy. We want them to be displayed proudly and have a unique character that makes them timeless.

We are always on the look out for a box, crate, basket or some other item once used for transporting goods that may have fallen out of favour with its owner. Many have been discarded before their functional life has come to an end. We take them, meticulously clean, repair and ready them for their new life as a cargo carrier for your bicycle. We love the vintage appeal of these items. They speak to a time when things were built to last and be used. By purchasing one of our bicycle “trunks” you will be proudly displaying your good taste and environmental conscience.

We were literally gob-smacked at the number of bicycle tires that were discarded from our shop and local bicycle shops everywhere. Even more perturbing is that bicycle tires are not recycled. So we decided to do something by turning as many used tires as we could in belts. Not only is the tire recycled, but many of the buckles used come from unsaleable belts purchased at thrift stores.

If we can give something new life, whether it is a complete vintage bicycle or an old inner tube, we will. Etsy is where we share our efforts with a community of persons with similar tastes and values.

We hope what you find at FreeLander Bicycles will allow you to be the bicycle ecologist the world needs more of.

Take care,

Bicycles represent the confluence of fiscal, environmental and social responsibility. They embody what we must do to live well in the 21st century. But beyond buying and riding a bicycle there is much more to consider. Is there a better way to buy a bicycle? Is there more I can do on and with my bicycle? Are there materials that are better than others to choose from. Can style, function and environmental stewardship be acquired for less...less money, less impact and less effort.

By restoring existing bicycles, choosing products made of natural materials when possible, up-cycling items that no longer serve their intended purpose, supporting the local economy and those of our near and distant neighbours with similar ideas and products; all these choices will make bicycling better for everyone.

We hope what you find at, and at the markets we attend, will allow you to be the bicycle ecologist the world needs more of.
