Hi there, I'm Louise -a Scottish nurse married to a Canadian pilot. Together we create fine pewter art in our home studio in Alberta, Western Canada.

Hello there 🙂
I'm Louise, a Scottish nurse with a love of art and all things tiny. I have a BSc Honours degree in Zoology, and my affection for nature inspires many of our pewter pieces. I was introduced to
metalwork through my husband Al, after I met him and made the move across the Big Pond from my homeland of Scotland to Canada. I've always had a creative flair, drawing and creating miniatures
from coloured polymer clay, and giving them as gifts to family and friends. Once living in Canada, I wanted to send gifts back to my friends and family in Scotland, but finding some truly made in Canada was difficult. So we began handcrafting some ourselves!

My husband Al is a Canadian pilot with a passion for metalwork, including sandcasting of aluminum, cast iron, bronze and most recently he and I have been working with lead-free pewter. Al has produced industrial metal pieces in the past but much prefers the artistic side of metalwork and has also experimented with stained glass.

"Together we create innovative pieces from molten Lead-free Pewter which is a beautiful tin
alloy. Pewter has a lower melting
point than many other metals. It does not tarnish, has a lovely silvery colour and can have a brilliant shine. We chose to work with pewter for these very reasons. Our inspiration for our patterns and designs mostly comes from my love of nature and all things tiny, plus from my homeland of Scotland and from Alberta, Canada.
Using hand tools, we work with sheet pewter to make bookmarks, hanging ornaments, keyrings, artisan buttons, hairclips and pendants.
We also cast molten pewter into our own moulds that we have created from silicone, soapstone and handcarved cuttlefish bone. Due to our technique that we use to create our decorative, free-form bowls, each one is different. We achieve different
finishes by changing variables such as temperature and casting technique, which have evolved
through our own trial and error. We make hanging decorations, and also miniatures to enhance our bowls, some of which are
available as standalone pieces. And we design and create our own imprints then sometimes
add colour. We make these miniatures and imprints by pouring molten pewter into our own silicone
moulds. Our original patterns for casting are first designed and carved in polymer clay or wax.
Once cooled, the pieces are hand finished by sanding, polishing or incorporated into one of our decorative bowls. Finally, every finished piece is hand engraved by me (Louise) with “Handmade in Alberta, Canada by Innovative Artisans”, the year it was created
and the name of the design if applicable, with the exception of our very small miniatures. Each piece is also signed by us with our initials.
We truly have a creative partnership, as one of us could not do this without the contribution of
the other.

We live with our little daughter on our lovely quarter section of trees, creek, garlic, and meadow near Warburg, Alberta, Canada with our dogs, cats, chickens and whatever bugs our daughter has in her beastie boxes.”

We conceived our idea of “Innovative Artisans” several years ago, experimenting with
various media and techniques. In August 2013 we first began creating, showing and selling our pewter art, our debut show being the Metal Art Show and Sale at the wonderful Reynolds-Alberta Museum,
Wetaskiwin in Sept. 2013, followed by an art gala in our local village of Warburg. Since then, our
pewter work has been accepted to sell in several select Alberta galleries and we are current members of
Alberta Craft Council. Events that we have taken part in include the Butterdome in Edmonton, Make It Edmonton, Hand 2 Hand and Red Deer’s “Our Best to You” Christmas show, plus our local village events. Our first outdoor sale was in the
Artisan Marketplace at Brooks Medieval Faire in August 2014. We opened our online Etsy store in 2016 to make our handcrafted pewter art more widely available.
