In my tiny studio, in a small town tucked into the edge of the Canadian Shield, I craft stoneware pottery. Each piece is one of a kind. The undulating repetitive lines in my work are carved, or drawn by hand. The process is time consuming, but the added dimension to a finished piece is well worth the investment. The visual texture of my carved pots, invites you to pick them up and trace the surface with your fingertips.

To say I opened my shop on Etsy at gunpoint would not be entirely truthful. The gun was never pointed at me, but its presence led me to make decisions, which over the year to follow, altered my life in a beautiful way.

While walking the beaches of Rio de Janeiro two questions kept surfacing. First was why I didn’t have a dog of my own? The second was why wasn’t I sharing my pottery?

As night market vendors set up their stalls along Copacabana, a man approached me and asked if I spoke English. I nodded yes. He told me not to move, and drew my attention to the gun in the waist of his pants.

I said “Hey”, without thinking, or waiting for him to say what he wanted.

The man looked surprised. I started backing into the crowd of people streaming along the sidewalk. We kept eye contact, as he calculated his next move.

I became a gazelle, or rather a whitetail deer. Either way, I was all flight and no fight.

I wound my way through the people and tents of the night market, always keeping my eyes on the man with the gun. He followed me for a while, then, he disappeared. I kept moving. Well-lit streets and crowded areas dictated my route.

Once in Ipanema, with adrenaline still pumping, but feeling safer, I sat down at a bar with windows open to an animated street. With a pint of beer in front of me, and a few more to follow, I lamented my lack of command of the Portuguese language. My traveling companions wouldn’t arrive until the next day, so I was resigned to not being able to tell the story of what happened. Instead, I resolved to get myself a dog, and to start putting my pottery out there.

A month after returning to Almonte, I tracked down a little brown puppy, my Mason. He has since become a big brown dog. The rest of the year I focused on his training, and reading up on everything involved in opening a shop on Etsy. I started selling my pieces locally, and in the spring I opened JBFORDstudio.
