From archives to embroidering costume history

I am an archivist, a proud spinster aunt, and I make stuff.

I started off studying photography, with a bit of ceramics and comparative religion on the side. At a loss for an occupation I then went to Library School (well, they called it the Faculty of Information Studies) for a Master's degree in Information Studies, specializing in Archives. Along the way I taught myself how to make beaded jewellery, and took classes in handbuilding jewellery and metalsmithing.

I learned how to sew as a little girl, and had attempted some embroidery at various points in my life, but I wasn't satisfied working with other people's patterns. I eventually decided to give embroidery another try, using old illustrations as patterns.

My work as an archivist informs my embroidery, and so my first patterns were from historical sources like old anatomy textbooks and natural history compendia. I quickly moved on to vintage erotic and pornographic photographs, stitching delicately tinted nudes, frequently embellished with chiyogami (Japanese paper) appliques.

My love of chiyogami and costume history led me to start experimenting with small paper embroideries of vintage clothing and accessories. I started with simple corsets and handbags, but my work became progressively more complicated, encompassing parasols, men’s hairstyles, beards and moustaches. Eventually I began creating full dresses cut from various combinations of papers and patterns.

Each dress is unique, with the process of creating a pattern taking upwards of four hours. Some pieces are made up of close to 20 individual pieces of paper, carefully cut out and arranged together.

People kept asking for animals, so after much experimentation to figure out a how to interpret them in a way that was consistent with my other work, I started on my stitched paper zoo.

    Shop policies

Last updated on 01 October, 2018
I want you to be happy with the piece(s) you buy from me, so let me know if your purchase doesn't meet with your expectations. Colours can sometimes be difficult to judge on the computer; if you're unsure if a blue is more blue-blue or more green-blue just ask!

If you'd like a custom piece made to match something specific, you can send me a fabric or paint swatch and I'll photograph some possibilities for you to look over.

    Accepted payment methods

Paypal Mastercard Visa American Express Apple Pay Gift card
Accepts Etsy Gift Cards and Etsy Credits
    Returns and exchanges
I gladly accept returns and exchanges
Contact me within: 14 days of delivery
Dispatch items back within: 30 days of delivery
    I don't accept cancellations
But please contact me if you have any problems with your order.
The following items can't be returned or exchanged
Because of the nature of these items, unless they arrive damaged or defective, I can't accept returns for:
    • Custom or personalised orders
    Returns and exchange details
If the item arrives damaged, send me a picture and I will either refund the cost, or make a replacement piece. As each piece is handmade I can't guarantee that a replacement will be identical, but it will be made to the same high standard, and as close to the original as I can get it. I'll send a picture of the replacement piece for your approval prior to shipping.

If your purchase gets lost in the mail, the same refund or replacement policy applies. Although I don't, of course, expect a picture!

Similarly, if it turns out that the colour wasn't at all what you wanted (because every computer screen is different) let me know and we can discuss a refund or a replacement piece.
    Payment
I accept any of the electronic payment methods used here on Etsy. You can cancel any time before shipping.
    Delivery
Within North America I send the pieces by regular mail (that means Canada Post and USPS). Within Canada you can upgrade to registered mail for $9.00 (which is exactly what Canada Post charges).

Shipping overseas is a bit more expensive.

    Customs Charges:
So far, I haven't had customs charge extra on any pieces that have been mailed internationally, but I can't guarantee that it won't happen. However, since I ship through the post office (and not a courier) the brokerage fees (what you pay to clear customs, in addition to the local tax charges that are the point of customs) should be minimal, if Customs does decide they really want those taxes from you!

The buyer is responsible for any import duties.
