Let's Clay!

Thank you for stopping by my shop to browse through my handcrafted polymer clay earrings! I've been using polymer clay since the early 1990's, creating jewelry, figurines, & wedding cake toppers, but my go to is, and always will be, earrings! I love making these little treasures! No paint, no stones, just clay!

I put aside my clay around 2002 to focus on life and a full time job after being at home with my kids for many years! I continued to "play" with clay doing the odd special little project but now that I'm retired I am excited to be creating again!

Although I like to have fun and keep things light, I take my craft seriously in that I strive to ensure I make a quality product! With anything handmade, you should expect some tiny imperfections as well as slight variations in design, colour or size. All of these attributes give you something unique with a little personality!

Polymer clay is kneaded, conditioned, rolled out, shaped, cut, baked, sanded, and then assembled by me! No paint is used! I finish with lead-free posts or wires and use a two-part process to secure posts in place.

There are numerous techniques to making earrings from polymer clay. The following are the three techniques I tend to use:

Slab technique - Think of the "slab" technique as an artist using the clay as a canvas! A larger chunk of clay is rolled out into a flat slab (I use a pasta maker or an 8" acrylic roller). Once that is ready, I then cut out shapes and designs (like flowers, abstract shapes, stripes, swirls, etc) from other colours and attach these small pieces of polymer clay on top of the slab to form a beautiful pattern. It can then be re-rolled to form a flat design, or I may leave as is to show a little more texture. Ideas are endless! Once the design is complete, I am ready to cut the slab into earring shapes!

Form and Shape - You can do just about anything with polymer clay! Mold it, shape it, blend it, layer it, weave it, texture it, stamp it, coil it … anything goes! You remember playing with play-dough or plasticine as a kid? Kind of like that but in much finer detail!

Cane Work - A polymer clay cane is a log of polymer clay that's made with a design that runs the entire length of the log. Slices from the cane will reveal the design and all slices from the cane will have the identical design. This is one of the most creative polymer clay techniques and can show off designs like flowers, stars, bull’s-eyes or random colourful patterns – even faces.

You are welcome to visit my Instagram and Facebook pages to see more photos of these techniques (a couple are shown below)!

After creating the pieces in my home studio, I bake them in an oven! Once they have cooled I can then complete each piece with a little buffing, and get them ready for assembly. I then attach each pair to one of my earring display cards, ready to package and mail out to their new home!

I hope you have as much fun wearing these colourful and lightweight earrings as I did making them!

Thanks for taking an interest in Maddiejax Clay!
Sincerely,
Gina

PS - Where does the name Maddiejax come from? Let's just say, I love my two pups ... Maddie and Jackson!

Hi, I'm Gina! I used to do the craft show circut back in the '90s while I was raising my two boys. After going back to work, I retired in 2019 and am so happy to be able to get back to my clay, creating fun, colourful earrings!

Meet Maddie and Jackson, the inspiration behind the name Maddiejax! Maddie, born Apr 2018, is a Shihpoo and definitely my lap dog. Jackson, born June 2012, a Mini Schnauzer/Cairn Terrier mix, may not be on my lap, but he's always close by!

Frequently asked questions
What is your policy on returns and exchanges?

While my Etsy site policies shows that I do not accept returns or exchanges, I will certainly do so for anything that should arrive damaged due to handling during shipping. Simply contact me within 3 days of receiving your earrings and we will make the arrangements!

What if my polymer clay breaks after shipping?

Polymer clay is very pliable, but like most anything, there is always a chance a product could break. Some clay colours bake harder than others, but for the most part the clay is slightly pliable. After shipment, if your earrings are broken in any way, please contact me and we will resolve it.

Why do my earrings look a little different than the photo?

This can be answered with one word! "Handcrafted"! All of the earrings are handmade and therefore unique! While I try to be consistent, it's not always possible ... and unique is much more fun anyway!

Polymer clay care instructions

- Polymer earrings are very lightweight. To avoid losing those that hang from ear wires, please use the rubber stoppers provided with that style. A good habit for all earrings that are on wires!
- Do not wear jewelry while showering, swimming or applying perfume, deodorant or hairspray.
- While the clay is quite strong, please take care not to bend or drop your polymer pieces, as they can be scratched or broken. Be careful not to drop them in areas such as purses/pockets. Store separately.
- Keep out of heat or extended periods of direct sunlight.
- For safety reasons, please keep parts away from small children.
- To clean dirt or makeup residue from earrings, simply use a damp cloth with mild soap or dip a cotton swab in rubbing alcohol.
