I paint. That's what I do.

I've been doing some form of art or another for many, many years. I graduated in Graphic Design in 1986 and, as often happens in life, I almost immediately put down my pencils and brushes after I got my diploma because school had killed my inspiration and drive, stifled me.

I devoted myself to music, to writing (I'm a French translator, that's my "real" job), to performing. But I started painting again in 2012.

I went right back to the style that I preferred back when I was in school: high-contrast black and white. Plain old black acrylic on canvas. I think I was afraid of colour. In fact, I always told people I did not feel confident around colour and math. This remains true about math.

I later decided to try my hand at a little bit of colour. I was surprised with the result! It took me a long time to find a medium that I felt was good for me - I wanted vivid colours, great coverage, and a variety of colours to choose from. The thought of mixing my own blends was just, too, well, "math-y" for me.

I decided to go with gouache. It's easy to work with, covers like a dream.

My style also evolved. I was always very rigid with myself, clean lines and all, and I decided to go against my natural tendency and be a little more fluid with the brush. As it turns out - it's lovely. A little bit more impressionistic, but every bit as eloquent.

My subjects are varied because I do quite a bit of commissions. However, I have a soft spot for Bowie, Elvis and characters that fascinate and entertain me!

I started printing some of my work to make prints available. Because I know that prints are expensive, I've made my available in two different price ranges. You can get my prints giclée printed on Hahnemuehle rag paper for a really vibrant high quality. And if you're like me and living on a budget that doesn't leave much room for art, I've also decided to offer a very affordable option, with prints professionally printed on matte paper (and by professionally, I mean I don't print them on my inkjet - I actually go through a printer). They are beautiful and crisp but not as chichi as the giclée prints.

Anyway, feel free to add me to your faves, because I will always be adding a LOT of stuff.

Also, if you want something done just for you, anyone, in any colour scheme, please just inbox me and I'll be happy to help :)

You will find me on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/MarcusWellsArt
and on my own website at www.marcuswellsart.com

And finally, thank you for reading this probably very boring bio!

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalized orders

I will be so happy to create a painting for you! My mediums of choice are gouache and acrylics on stretched canvas. I work in any size but I recommend 12 x 12 as it is a great, unusual size, and if you get several pieces, you can "tile" them in funky ways. Please note that I cannot accept cancellations for custom orders, since they are made just for you.

In order to work on a commission for you, I require full payment in advance and a clear, high-resolution, fairly close up photo of the person you want painted. I often receive fuzzy photos taken too far away, washed out photos (too bright), too dark photos. Keep in mind that the more details I see of the subject, the more striking your painting will be.

Sizing details

The prints are square, 12 inch x 12 inch in size.
Each print is professionally printed on matte stock and is surrounded by a small white border.

To achieve the look of the pictures in my shop, buy a larger square frame and add a mat suited for a 12 x 12 print.

If you prefer, you can simply buy a square 12 x 12 frame without a mat.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All prints are carefully wrapped in kraft paper and shipped to you in a robust triangular mailing box to prevent damage.

Custom paintings are shipped in a box, duly protected.

I'm sorry - we do not offer gift wrapping (because I really suck at it).

Artist technique

Many people ask if my paintings are digital. They are not. Your print is a photo of an actual canvas I painted with gouache, acrylics and paint brushes, with my own hands. In fact, the prints often show the small imperfections in the canvas, my brush strokes, my drawing lines etc.

Prep time

I do not order prints in advance nor do I print them at home. I send them to the printer as you purchase them. The printer usually requires 1 week to produce the print, after which I send it to you. Please take these timelines into consideration when ordering.
