My life in Bookbinding
Decidi ir para a escola de bibliotecas. Enquanto trabalhava para o meu diploma de MLIS, descobri que havia algumas aulas de bookbinding oferecidas à noite, no porão da biblioteca da Universidade. Eram cursos sem crédito que poderiam ser incluídos na minha transcrição oficial, e eu pensei que era simplesmente espetacular. Então eu me matriculei. Fiz um termo de dente-de-tudo. Depois outro, depois outro. Terminei meu MLIS e desde então, passei muito mais tempo enclausuando do que no campo da bibliotecária.
Eu realmente gosto de fazer livros e o processo de projetar livros e trabalhar novas ideias. Eu tenho reservado por vinte anos agora, e eu ainda sinto que eu estou apenas começando a arranhar a superfície do conhecimento bookbinding. Fico maravilhado com o trabalho de mestres pastadores ao redor do mundo e só posso imaginar um dia criando em seu nível. Enquanto trabalho para esse objetivo, continuo aprendendo o máximo que posso sobre todas as facetas do ofício. É uma jornada agradável, sabendo que estou fazendo o que amo todos os dias.
I decided to go to library school. While I was working toward my MLIS degree, I discovered that there were some bookbinding classes offered in the evenings, in the basement of the University's library. They were non-credit courses that could be included on my official transcript, and I thought that was just spectacular. So I enrolled. I did one term of bookbinding. Then another, then another. I finished my MLIS and since then, I have spent much more time bookbinding than I have directly in the field of librarianship.
I really enjoy making books and the process of designing books and working out new ideas. I have been bookbinding for twenty years now, and I still feel like I'm only beginning to scratch the surface of bookbinding knowledge. I marvel at the work of master binders around the world and can only imagine someday creating at their level. As I work toward that goal, I continue to learn as much as I can about all facets of the craft. It is an enjoyable journey, knowing that I am doing what I love every day.
