Carving And Creation

I started carving rubber stamps after a trip to Umbria. The Italian countryside struck me as a series of interlocking blocks of colour, texture and light. A paintbrush felt like the wrong instrument to use to capture the landscape.

A paintbrush affects the surface of the paper only; I wanted to deepen, to engrave, to impress. I wanted to place discrete blocks of colour, one next to another. I wanted a series of individually important shapes that linked together to form the scene, while still maintaining their own boundaries. Each impression holds its own integrity. Each unit is robust.

I started cutting shapes out of wood, or using found objects to press with. I discovered the flexibility of soft lino and I started to cut more specific shapes and eventually began carving the surface as well. Never looked back!

Care instructions

Hand carved rubber stamps are easy to maintain. They will last for years with minimal care.

They can be washed with mild soap using a soft toothbrush or nail brush to gently clean the surface.

If you use your stamps with standard ink stamp pads, you may find you need do no more than "off-stamp" any excess ink onto a scrap piece of paper or rub the stamp surface with a damp cloth.

If your stamp is mounted on a block of wood, do not leave it soaking in water.

If you use your stamp with acrylic paints, make sure to wash it gently and thoroughly BEFORE the paint dries on it.
