Project Neon started as a way to keep photographing New York City when my day job kept me at my desk past sunset in the winter. It was also a way to explore a neighborhood — the Upper East Side of Manhattan — that I didn't know all that well, and also to celebrate the centenary of neon signage. Once I started documenting the neon of New York, though, I couldn't stop, so I kept wandering all five boroughs at night with my camera, documenting the business name & location of every neon sign I photographed.

Press from The New Yorker, The New York Times, Collectors Weekly, Gizmodo, and others helped build support, and I later ran a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a free iPhone app to help spread the neon love.

I post my best photos on Flickr, and the Project Neon photo set there now has over 1,200 photos, each with the location of the neon sign carefully documented. I hope my photos inspire people to support shops with neon signage, and to get out and take their own neon photos as well.
