About RUFFSTUFFSHOP

Sales 366
On Etsy since 2015

I create feminist art for the pop culture and cat enthusiast!

RuffStuff started in 2015 with a series of cat paintings.
Based on famous figures such as Frida Kahlo (and renamed aptly – Frida Cat-lo) the series was a hit amongst the crazy cat ladies of Etsy and lead me to start taking pet painting commissions. This may seem a far-cry from where RuffStuff is today, but it was in fact one of three re-brandings which I went through!
As business picked up, I changed the store’s style to more ‘80s fan art, and finally landed on the business you see today: feminist, with a pop culture 90s vibe.
So why Etsy? It’s simple. I wanted to sell online but I didn’t want to have to create my own website. I wanted to be part of a community.
And – why feminism? Feminist art comes naturally to me. I wanted to bring my social opinions into my art and the prints, patches, and pins you see today evolved from what I viewed every day and what I viewed culturally – with a few verbal statements thrown in to spice it up.
Feminism is important to me because I believe in equality. I dream of a day when feminism isn’t a dirty word. It’s amazing how a seemingly-dead movement has burst onto the scene as a huge social phenomenon, especially in the last 5 years, and I’m proud to be involved in a movement which is such a large part of what I stand for, and which creates the foundation of my beliefs.
Through RuffStuff and woman power, I’ve managed to take myself places I never expected. Hiding out as an introvert selling online from home is one thing, but doing physical markets is something I never thought I’d do in a million years due to how socially awkward and anxious I am.
Now, my pride in the work I do has helped me to be comfortable with getting more social with my selling and has helped in the bigger picture with self-esteem issues.
As a creator, I’m very hard on myself and I attribute much of RuffStuff’s branding and success to this. Regularly I’ll post 10-15 prints only to take them off my page shortly after, even if they’ve been selling. RuffStuff is a brand focused on putting its best foot forward.
So – what’s next? I’m hoping to incorporate my designs into more types of clothing. While I’ve been producing t-shirts and sweaters, I’d love to do full on coordinating outfits like suits, etc. with rose designs and over the top ridiculous blazers. If you couldn’t tell already, my aesthetic is what I’d call “extra”.
And, while it’s hard to truly predict what will happen in the future – it’s always ok to have dreams.
