Kintsugi the beauty of imperfections
- Origins
Miyajima is the name of an island off the coast of Hiroshima.
On this island lives a family of Kimono artisans and traders who have also always been involved in antiques and traditional Japanese objects.
The Realkintsugi project was born in 2016, from the meeting between this family and an Italian architect in love with the ancient traditions of this distant land.
The goal of this project is to share and illustrate ancient Japanese traditions, including that of Kintsugi, or the restoration of pottery with gold.
All products restored by Realkintsugi are the result of years of study, practice and research.
Realkintsugi is a cultural project, seeking to revitalize an incredible tradition, to prevent it from being forgotten and to ensure that Kintsugi does not belong only in a museum, but by letting this restoration technique still remain alive in everyday life.
- The Process
The Realkintsugi workshop follows the ancient and genuine Kintsugi technique.
A long process in which time is one of the important ingredients as much as other materials.
The method follows a total of 4 steps and each requires different materials and skills.
From the reconstruction of ceramics, to the application of resins and finally the application of gold. Kintsugi is not a decorative technique; it is a long and delicate process.
Realkintsugi's goal is to preserve and share this valuable practice, to keep it alive so that it will not be forgotten.

The marks left by time tell the story of the objects around us.
Kintsugi, which literally means, "To repair with gold," recognizes and enhances the significance of these marks. Cracks restored in this way make the object special, which instead of being thrown away, thus acquires great value, becoming a precious and unique fragment whose history is guarded by a thin golden line.
