"SaamiCraft", formerly known as "Saami and Roo", showcases handcrafted traditional Saami and Celtic inspired jewelry. I come from a diverse background of Celtic and Scandinavian ancestry. Most of my bracelets are made with reindeer leather that is imported from the Saami tribes in Northern Sweden where reindeer husbandry is still an important part of the Saami culture. I also occasionally use buckskin deer and elk leather from British Columbia and Scottish deer leather that has been tanned in the old traditional ways. Kangaroo lace from Australia, horse hair, and Salmon Leather is also incorporated into some of my bracelets.
The hand-twinned nickel-free pewter with 10% sterling silver is imported from Sweden. Each bracelet and necklace has been braided with the silver pewter and meticulously hand sewn with invisible thread. I put a lot of thought and attention to detail in all my creations as I am truly passionate about this art form.
Tenntrådsbroderi, or embroidering with pewter or tin thread is almost a lost art. The Saami used tin thread since the 1600’s to decorate their clothing. The tin was obtained by melting down old pewter plates and dishes and was spun into thread. The use of pewter thread has recently become fashionable in pewter braided reindeer leather bracelets.
All of my bracelets can be made in a variety of colors and sizes, and custom orders are always welcome!
Each purchase comes in its own special gift box with a write-up about the bracelet, as well as a beautiful handmade gift card.
It is my hope that my Saami and Celtic inspired creations will serve to remind the wearer to be mindful and present in their own lives and Spiritual journey. We are all connected.

Handcrafted on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada.
Custom orders are always welcome, and most designs shown are available in any size or leather color preference, however, custom orders will not qualify for any sales or coupons that are currently offered.

Sincerely,
Alexandra Lanzarotta ~ SaamiCraft

About SaamiCraft

Sales 216
On Etsy since 2017

I am working towards creating something generous, something that matters. My intent is to create something unique that resonates with the wearer and in some way changes their perception.

My family clans have travelled across the Highlands of Scotland, and also across the northern lands of Sweden. After a somewhat nomadic life myself, I have found my home by the ocean on the West Coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is here that I create my Saami-inspired craft. I identify strongly with both my Celtic and Scandinavian origins, and I strive to honor and reflect both of these cultures in my craft.

Swedish culture and traditions have long been part of my life. Years ago, the first Saami-style bracelet I came across was worn by a distinguished elderly Swedish gentleman at a traditional Lucia Christmas celebration.
I was so taken by the fine workmanship and detail of his bracelet, as well as the history and culture of the Saami people, that I decided to pursue a study of Saami culture and crafts.

After much research, I ordered materials from Sweden to create my own uniquely styled reindeer leather and pewter-thread woven bracelets, purses and jewelry. I have been passionately pursuing Saami Craft ever since.

Years ago, I also studied the craft of leather braiding with an old cowboy at a horse ranch in the interior of British Columbia. He had learned his braiding techniques and knot tying as a young man sitting around campfires with other cowboys after a long day's work herding cattle. I credit this cowboy for teaching me the art of braiding and leather work.

I believe jewellery, as an art, form should be fluid. As an artist my designs are a fusion of many different cultures and influences. I grow and change as a person when I incorporate new ways of thinking, feeling or being into my creations.

It is my hope that what I create in some small way transforms or brings joy to others.
Wearable art is about the magic of individualism and transformative power of style. It is my hope that something I have taken the time to create, resonates with you, your life, or a loved one in some special way.
