Announcement    Saami & Roo showcases handcrafted traditional Saami and Celtic inspired jewellery, and unique hand braided kangaroo leather jewellery. I come from a diverse background of Celtic and Scandinavian. All of my plant tanned reindeer leather is imported from the Sami tribes in Northern Sweden where reindeer husbandry is still an important part of the Saami culture.
The hand-twinned nickel free pewter with 10% sterling silver is also imported from Sweden. I also occasionally use buckskin deer and elk leather from British Columbia, and Kangaroo lace form Australia in some of my bracelets. I have named many of my bracelet and choker creations after the Rune Stones, which were last in current use in Iceland during the late Middle Ages. It is my hope that my Saami & Roo creations will serve to remind the wearer to be mindful and present in their own lives and Spiritual journey.
Tenntrådsbroderi, or embroidering with pewter or tin thread is almost a lost art. The Saami used tin thread since the 1600’s to decorate their clothing. The tin was obtained by melting down old pewter plates and dishes and was spun into thread. The use of pewter thread has recently become fashionable in jewellery items such as pewter braided reindeer leather bracelets
All of my bracelets can be made in a variety of colors and sizes, and custom orders are always welcome! Each purchase comes in its own special gift box with a write-up about the bracelet and where applicable it's Rune namesake and meaning.

About SaamiandRoo

Sales 22
On Etsy since 2017

I am working towards creating something generous, something that matters. My intent is to create something unique that resonates with the wearer and in some way changes their perception.

The first Saami bracelet I came across years ago was worn by a distinguished elderly Swedish gentleman who was tending bar at a traditional Lucia celebration.
I was so taken by the fine workmanship and detail of his bracelet, and the history and culture of the Saami people, that I became inspired. After much research I ordered the materials I would need from Sweden to create these beautiful reindeer and pewter-thread woven bracelets, and I was committed to create my own unique Saami-inspired jewellery.
The Sami handicraft, The Duodji, is well known for it’s beautiful ethnic style with strong colours in weaved ribbons and also embroideries and jewelry made of spun silver/pewter wire. These bracelets are popular all over the world but hard to find in stores. Beautiful Sami bracelets has been handmade from 100% vegetable dyed, soft reindeer leather with pewter and silver braided detailing and Handmade antler button made from shed reindeer antlers.

My partner and I studied leather braiding years ago with an old cowboy named Bob at a horse ranch in the Okanagan. He learned his braiding techniques and knot tying as a young man sitting around campfires with other cowboys after a long day's work. Kangaroo leather has a unique structure that differs from most other leathers. Its properties are similar to the prehistoric fibres found in birds and reptiles and is one of the strongest leathers available. Our kangaroo hides come from Australia. Our lace is cut from culled "Roo" hides, and is then split, bevelled, and conditioned. I think of Bob often and some of the amazing stories he shared of his cowboy life when I am cutting the leather kangaroo lace or doing a particularly challenging knot he so patiently taught us, and I feel honored to have met him.
I feel that jewellery as an art form should be fluid. As an artist my designs are a fusion of many cultures and influences around me. I change and grow as an artist and as a person when I do not stagnate into one way of creating or being. My jewellery reflects this attitude.

Sizing details

To order the best size bracelet for you or your loved one, simply measure around the wrist using a flexible measuring tape, and add 1 cm for narrow bracelet designs, and 1.5 to 2cm for wider cuff style bracelets, depending if you prefer a comfortably snug or a looser fit.

When you first try on your new bracelet, the loop may be snug at first. After some wear your bracelet will form to your wrist and become easier to close.
Since it is made out of leather, please take your bracelet off when in contact with water or when swimming. If you do occassionally get your bracelet wet it should be fine.
The pewter will get a lovely shine or patina as it ages, and it will get more and more beautiful over time.
