Sarah Ronald's Etsy shop

This shop started quietly in 2014 in Sarah's spare time, as a compliment to her slowly growing art practice and online promotional efforts.

I am a Canadian artist and animal lover (can you tell?). My artwork is all about wild animals, and explores themes of conservation, story telling, self identity, and being just plain weird now and then. I talk to almost every animal that I meet.

My name is Sarah Ronald and I am passionate about animals and making art. Many years ago I decided to combine the two and from that day forward my art practice has been focused on the theme of wild animals, specifically the ones that live in the suburbs and that are most directly impacted and influenced by human activities.

Although I have always used hints of bright colours, over the past couple of years my animals have become increasingly colourful; I use colour symbolically to depict the changes that an animal has to go through as its environment and landscape is continually changing. I refer to this body of work as ‘spirit animals’ or ‘degrees of enlightenment’ – the more colourful an animal the more it has adapted to its ever changing world. Through this lens I’m interested in exploring themes of conservation, identity, storytelling, and at times even question how we incorporate animals symbolically into our lives (and art!).

I consider myself a drawer because I love the immediacy of drawing, however I am actually a mixed media artist because I also incorporate paint, collage, resin, and more recently 3D printing into my art practice. I take pride in mixing things up and exploring how elements work together, I love creating layered effects in my work through the use of drafting film, resin, interference paints, and all sorts of other explorations that inform my work. This leads my artwork down some really fun paths (and some weird ones too!). I definitely have some more serious work and some total goofy stuff.... it’s all about balance afterall, right?

In this shop I offer prints, small originals, painted 3D animals, and some random bits and bobs. I do my own archival printing on paper, 3D printing, resin pours, framing, and of course the making of the originals in my studio. If your interested in something larger that what I list in this shop, fret not as I have more originals available (, and I also do commissions and special projects on occasion - just let me know!

If you want a glimpse of the artwork and projects that are up and coming in the studio I encourage you to check out my social media feeds:

Returns and exchange details
In general, I will accept returns of work that is in new condition with notice provided within 3 days of receiving and the package sent back within 7 days of receiving. Return and exchange shipping costs (including the cost of sending a new item to the customer in the case of an exchange) is the responsibility of the customer. Items being returned /exchanged must be packaged with the same care, materials and method it was originally sent.

Please note that commissioned artwork is not returnable, neither is work that has been personalized for a customer.

If you receive your order and it has been damaged during shipping please let me know right away (send photos too) so that I may try to address the issue with the shipper and also try to find a way to remedy the situation.

Please note that works with resin finish may have the tiniest of tiny bubble or speck of dust in one or two spots (even famous artwork has random additions like paintbrush & dog hairs in the work!). I will never post an item where the spec or bubble is highly distracting to the overall finish or image, I simply wouldn't feel right selling a piece that has major imperfections that distract from the work. That said, resin is sometimes unpredictable, and now and then even with the utmost care, a tiny piece of dust or little bubble will form long after I've torched and sealed the piece to set. This is a factor of the resin material and as such I will not accept returns due to tiny dust specs or bubbles.

I also will not accept returns if the back or underside of a piece still has remnants of material on it. I sand the backs of my resin pieces but not to the extent that I fully eliminate evidence of its creation. It's art. It was made in a studio, by hand, one at a time. There's gonna be some evidence of its creation. That's how you know it is unique and authentic and not made in a factory. Ditto with my 3D painted animals. They show lines from the 3D print process, that's part of the material, like how canvas or wood can sometimes show texture on a painting or the texture of paper shows on a water colour or drawing. My 3D animals are made in a studio, one at a time, hand painted, and again they sometimes have evidence of being an art object. I will not accept returns due to the texture of a piece not being preferable. Also, you shouldn't reject an animal just cause you don't like it's coat or skin texture, that's just plain mean.

If you have any questions or concerns about these policies please contact me BEFORE you make your purchase.
Taxes are currently factored into the item price, shipping costs are added during checkout. Please note I do not accept cancellations simply because I work on a lot of projects at once, and I usually don't have the time to undo or fix something on short notice. It's like that time when your old employer called you to come help with a project. Nope, moved on dude, can't go backwards.
Items are sent using Canada Post ground shipping and once delivered to the post office shipping times are determined by the postal services.

If the item is required by a specific date, please contact me for a shipping quote or to make arrangements for a courier company instead (additional costs will apply). Carrier Pigeon delivery is available upon request, but they usually don't deliver the work and when they do it's covered in bird poop. Not really ideal. Maybe let's pick a modern carrier with tracking devices and insurance coverage, yes?
Additional policies and FAQs
I use high quality materials and all art comes ready to display, the exception of prints on paper, which are meant to be framed by the customer.

Artwork that incorporates resin coating should be handled with care: even though the resin is non toxic and museum grade, it will be permanently damaged if dropped directly on corner or scratched on the surface. Treat these works like you would any painting, with the exception that they can be cleaned with a soft non-textured tissue. Gently placing glassine or an un-creased plastic bag over the front is the ideal method to safely transport a resin finished piece.

I create all of my prints in my studio using archival paper and pigmented ink (however some much larger size prints are done with a print shop). Print sizes indicated here are of the image size, there is a border around each print so that you can mat and frame it. Prints are mailed with a backing and enclosed in a plastic sleeve. Each print is signed and titled.

Yes. I have a 3D printer. Each animal takes roughly 4 hours to print, then I sand the rough bits off with a dremmel, apply acrylic paint and sometimes gold pen, a gloss medium finish, and depending on the piece they are hang-able (ornament) or affixed to another surface, and sometimes are plain old free standing on their own. They are all one of a kind. Handmade with a dash of humour in Canada.
