Happy chaotic order, a brightly planned haphazardness.

I'm Sashira Gafic, an artist and former junior high art teacher living in Winnipeg, Manitoba. My main mediums as of late are watercolour and punch needle embroidery, however I love pen and ink, and acrylic painting as well. Much of my watercolour work is inspired by the organic world that surrounds me, but pattern and repetition always shine through. My fibre art is a reflection of my family history and my sense of humour. Most of what I make comes from my desire for a chaotic order, a planned haphazardness.

I've been making art for as long as I can remember and after putting my teaching career on hold, decided to make artwork for others in a purposeful way. I used to use art only as a relaxation tool, a minor hobby, a conversation piece. Now it is a priority and a part of my identity that I put in the forefront. I'm not out to make a big statement or change the world, but I want to share what I make, because it makes me happy.

My work is mainly lighthearted, bright fun, with a bit of nostalgia for my childhood. It is also a search for connection to my cultural history. In my shop you can find original paintings and drawings, cards and prints, and fibre wall hangings.

Some of my more geometric images may have caught your eye. My father is from Bosnia, and growing up, our home was filled with beautiful handmade carpets from his home town of Sarajevo. Growing up in an environment filled with the glorious textures and patterns of the Balkans has made its mark on my creative mind. I'm always drawn to carpets and kilims, not just from Bosnia, but from all over the world. The geometric designs have influenced my love for imperfect symmetry.

Thanks so much for taking a look!
